I live in Czechia and tried to contact many Toyota dealers in Germany and the response was the same in every case, that basically they are not allowed to sell the GR86 for export. Let us know if you're able to order one in France
That's plainly illegal, you should report it to the competent authorities in your country. We have a free single market in Europe since 1993, it's long time that consumers exercise their rights. You can buy your goods incl your car anywhere in the EU and have it delivered at your place of residence. The automobile industry is very powerful and they keep fragmenting the EU single market according to national borders, with different pricing, quotas and delivery dates because it helps them maximise their profits and sales production, but this has to stop sooner or later. Member States are also protecting their national markets through red tape and imaginery compliance verifications (there's no such thing as re-importing a car within the EU, it's like importing inter City in the same country). Unfortunately change might only happen bottom up if consumers start buying cars abroad in another EU member state. France is my top choice and best bet for a yellow GR86 in 2023 to be used in Belgium. Don't stick to your country market, dare to shop abroad despite the administrative hurdles it's worth a shot!

hi guys, I see some good news again, mainly from Italy and Germany, so congrats on everyone lucky. I am happy for you.
I was contacted today by my dealer as well, first time he was able to give me more specific information. If everything goes well and there are no unexpected events (hmm, what could possibly go wrong, right? :), they are expecting my car late august / early september. I do not mind waiting to be honest, it was my realistic expectation it would go like this...
But I read some frustrated people here, which is understandable...

well if anyone fancy something else, I am actually selling my pride and joy, a beautyfull red Honda S2000 in nearly new condition with only 30k km. as mentioned here already, that car is a true gem and you do not need to be a Honda fanboy to really appreciate the experience. So if I can help someone to improve your mood by suggesting a worthwhile alternative, feel free to hit me up. I would love to keep it, but probably can not justify two sporty rides...

otherwise I will keep my fingers crossed for all of us and hope everyone will get some good news sooner or later.

cheers everyone.

Thanks for the positive vibe @palo_lude , it is much needed and kudos to all the lucky guys! ;) I might qualify as one of the frustrated guys over here, I officially ordered probably as one of the first in Europe (21th February 2022) and so far the message from Czech dealers was along the lines : "we don't know / expect your car in March 2023..." Late August / early September would be fine with me, so I could still enjoy the car this summer. But it's a lot different story to get the car half a year later, during winter time.

Let's hope that the deliveries turn out for the better.(y)

hey buddy, heads up, don't you worry. it can be all different for all of us in a month or two if things go south... take it easy, cars will come, it is just a matter of time and our patience.
you did all right, now it is not up to you. so relax, enjoy life and look forward to each new free day.
take it as an opportunity. buy some rusty old beater, like a lightweight civic, or even that twingo RS mentioned earlier and enjoy the hell out of it.
we are still some extra lucky bastards not having to deal with stuff that other people are going through right now ;)

Its not illegal.
You can buy where you want, but also up to you (them) to sell or not to sell to who you want.

If a dealer does not want to sell something to someone, its their right.
The cars are allocated for each country and dealers/importers have aggreements to sell their cars in their markets.

With cars being sold out after 35secs, 40min, 3days and so on, dealers have a strong argument to prefer their own marked.
if they cant cover their own demand, why should they sell cars to a different marked?

I know all this is very frustrating, but its not illegal...

The biggest problem is, that the car is only sold for 2 years...
Without that pressure, people would be much more relaxed and patient.

In this case is really frustrating, because the car is not listed at the czech website, so i guess it will not come to Czechia , officially.
The only option will be to buy one from a private person.

As i said multiple times: Toyota is doint themselves ot a favor with the whole strategy. They are upsetting alot of people.
Also here in Germany, where the mostc ars seem to be availble, many peolpe a upset, because they didnt get one, yet.

That is true, waiting a few months is nothing in comparison to what's going on to the east and I think about it daily.

The CZ Toyota was actually one of the first to mention the GR86 in the EU market. Nová Toyota GR86 | Přivítejte třetí model GR

Of course the dealer can choose to whom sell or not to sell. However refusing a customer plainly due to nationality is not right. It doesn't make any difference to whom you bill the car in the EU. The VAT and registration fees are customer's responsibilities anyway.

They hardly make any profit selling the car, they expect you to have the car maintained there for years, that's what keeps them alive. So they don't make any profit selling to someone living 100s of KM's away. I kind of respect this.

At least that's what my dealer told me, sales profit margins have been decreasing for years. More and more dealers will be closing because maintenance is easier and much cheaper on electric vehicles. Companies are searching for other ways to get the money out of our pockets (pay per month options like lighting functions and GPS, looking at you ridiculous Audi). Or selling cars online directly from the manufacturer. It's going the wrong direction, another reason to buy a relatively affordable GR and enjoy the shit out of it while we still can. Keep this car forever guys.

So I got following responses from two german Toyota dealers:

"danke für Ihre Anfrage. Wir dürfen leider keine Neuwagen in die EU verkaufen. Sonst bekommen wir von Toyota Deutschland eine Vertragsstrafe." and "der Grund ist das Toyota das nicht erlaubt. Ein Toyota der in Deutschland über einen deutschen Händler verkauft wird muss auch in Deutschland zugelassen werden. Das steht im Händlervertrag mit Toyota."

Is this even legal?

Thats what i said.

They have contracts with toyota to only sell to german customers. Or exacly: the car has to be registered in Germany.

Well, now you have written evidence of restrictive practices. It's called indirect discrimination, based on your place of residence in the EU, which is a way to fragment the Single Market into the good old-fashioned national markets. You (and others) should complain /ask for mediation here :

Again: Sellers can descide on their own, who they sell to.
Its NO discrimination, if they decide to sell only in their country.

It would be discrimination, if they charged foreigners more than locals.

You (only) have they right to buy anywhere to the same conditions as residents, but sellers are not obligated to sell the anyone, who want to buy their products.
E.g. if the boss of a supermarked does not want to sell you their wares, they are allowed to do so.

I found this german article about it. t3n – digital pioneers | Das Magazin für digitales Business
You can auto translate or google yopurself for something like "eu seller discrimination".

The largest car manufacturer in world has a big legal department, and they will surely not do something obviously illegal...

Mine will arrive in Zeebrügge at 3rd of Juli.
Does anybody know, how to find the ship, that will transport it?
Toyota Slovenia is making fun of me (and other who want the car here) on Facebook :(

Why put an ad with a car that you don't even know when/if will come to our country is beyond me...
Germany had like 2 weeks marketing and 10 of those were after release. 10 days later sold out -> no advertisement since end of march since 😂 😂

One Czech dealer e-mailed me that he just spoke with the importer and there won't be anymore allocations for the EU
For EU or Czech Republic only? What you mean by allocations, no possibility to place orders for GR86 anymore for whole Europe, till the end production year 2024? Sounds hard to believe...

Toyota should have still plenty of time before the new EU legislation comes into action to sell their cars. Either the dealer is misleading us, or something else is happening behind the scenes.

If this wild speculation is indeed true, maybe the car has a very tight profit margin in EU, and with the current rise of material costs and maybe with worse than expected EV/ICE ratio in Toyota car fleet for EU (CO2 sanctions), it is simply not profitable to sell the car here, so Toyota is silently pulling the plug?
