Not surprised. This is where I get mad with the whole tariffs bit. It's one thing to think trade needs to be re-balanced, and taking decisive actions to make that happen...it's quite another to be trying to run a business when the tariffs are X one day, Y the next, and having NO idea what they will be long term because first they were delayed 90 days, then they were reinstated...then there was a deal and they changed again....and they might change again next month...it might be a decent long term play, but it is bending over all kinds of industry and business during the initial phase. I sure as hell wouldn't want to be one of the bean counters at these companies. It's like trying to herd cats and domesticate impalas.

Not just the BRZ....looks like the Rex is also going to jump by 2 grand. That brings a base model with destination fee dangerously close to $40k. Yeah, that ain't gonna fly.

The market on second hand twins is already extremely high, probably an all-time-high outside of the first year they came out (when Carmax/Carvana were offering over MSRP for them).

0-10K mile cars are currently getting offered $27-29K via Carmax/Carvana depending on trim and location.

Glad I finally found a good deal on a lightly used GR86 today! Flying out to buy it tonight asap before it disappears. 😄

I considered a second hand GR Corolla before I ordered my GR86.
It's a great car all around, faster than the twins, thanks to adjustable AWD even drifts well.
But when you drive it in a daily traffic it still feels like a Corolla. You seat like in a Corolla, you look at a Corolla dash. Doesn't make you feel special :)

I mean, you gotta think it through. If US implements tariffs that make foreign things more expensive, they should offer domestic alternatives for these products so that US citizens buy more stuff made in America. That's the whole point right? If GR86/BRZ becomes too expensive, an American car manufacturer should step forward, fill in the gap and produce their own affordable lightweight manual ICE sports car.

The problem with that theory is that all American manufacturers have left that market and are not going back, they want to sell you trucks and SUV's.

Cars like the twins will never be developed again, this was a longshot by Subaru and Toyota and they hit a homerun, but no one else will create that type of vehicle again. The Miata will remain as it was developed long ago.

The new CEO of Stellantis, who happens to be the old CEO of Stellantis, made a comment a few months ago that he would love to create and compete in the affordable sports car space. I'm sure its just lip-flapping and hot air, but who knows. He is upping Hemi production, eliminated all but one model of the Charger EV, and actually understands the American market unlike his predecessor. So I guess ya never, never know.

My take is that decades ago if one wanted any sportiness in their car (better handling, more power, sexier look) they had to go to an actual sports car. Today a regular commuter car will run laps around the supercars of yesteryear, so most people are fine with a spiced up family car, and the demand for sports car is reduced to just those that want an actual sports car. Sadly I'm not seeing much investment into small, lightweight, RWD, affordable cars.

It's great the moronic thing people voted for and likely didn't understand is happening! I love paying more for things I need/want for no clear visible goal as we try to attempt to shift from a service based economy into a production based economy in 3.5 years. Surely such a thing is possible and a good idea.

The US will never create a car like this, so the idea that GM/Ford/Stellantis is going to create a non-profitable car that is the antithesis of every strategy they've shown in the past 10 years is hilarious. Ford's only RWD based car is the Mustang which isn't even selling, GM killed off everything but the Corvette in their sports car catalog, and Stellantis will forever stay selling high HP massive cars. The production of a Miata/Twin competitor would take years and would likely be under the next president regardless. So what we be the point of tooling up to create a competitor to a car that will back to the same price in a few years.

You know what's bad for car companies? Instability. They have all been tooling up for EV production just for the pendulum to swing the other way. They are making decisions based off years in the future and when it's unstable like this they are for damn sure not going to take a risk on developing a low volume, low profit sports car.

Can we just have neither please? I’d rather just have no excess inflation whether it’s from the last senile moron’s stupid ideas or this senile moron’s stupid ideas. I really don’t care whether the current guy that’s obviously horrible is slightly better than the last guy who was also obviously horrible. I don’t care if a massive expansion in government spending and unsustainable growth of the budget deficit is labeled as the “inflation reduction act” or the “big beautiful bill”. Both screw me over and push the country closer to the point of federal interest payments outstripping federal revenue. It’s like taking your car to a mechanic that destroys the air conditioner while trying to patch a tire instead of destroying the brakes while trying to patch a tire and arguing about which mechanic is best. How about a mechanic that just doesn’t try to scam you, does the job well, doesn’t break things, and does the job in a timely manner?

Sorry for the rant. It’s just totally fine IMO for people to complain about prices getting jacked up because of politicians doing dumb stuff. And complaining about one politician doing dumb stuff doesn’t mean that you like it when the politicians on the other team also do dumb stuff.

The big three will never develop a new car, never , ever, ever, did I say never ? They are so short sighted and they can't stomach low volume vehicles, they have gotten rid of so many good vehicles over the years. The development costs are too high and they are apt to drop models after a few good years, like nothing. They want to sell you big ass trucks and SUV's, that is where their profits are, cars don't make money for them.

The best cars in the world are ones developed many years back, and ones that have been improved upon year after year and developed a strong following of customers as a result. The big three have made lots of cars but did not let them flourish enough to keep in production. The Corvette and the Mustang are the last mohicans among the Big 3, but they did it the right way with both cars, kept them going for many years and improving upon them year after year. Dodge did well with the Challenger but but they did not have it in regular production for long periods of time, the charger is now gone. I owned 2 SRT-4's years back, loved them both (Neon and Caliber versions) , hated to see them go.

Honda can't bring back the S2000, not enough volume to make a total redesign profitable and no one can stomach low volume cars these days, not even Honda who has done well with cars i the past. You won't see a new ICE sports car, sorry I just don't see it.

The price of everything is going up, so much price increases are coming down the pipeline, just look at Walmart, Amazon, the price of coffee, food, like everything. Companies like Subaru can't avoid the price increases, their recent price change is no surprise and not as bad as I would have expected. Who wants to see Apple Iphones at $3,500 , lol, I never owned one in my life and never will but it could happen.

The price of everything is going up, so much of it coming down the pipeline, I'd love to suggest a reason for it but that gets into politics that people will dislike. You will see inflation hitting 4% in 2025, it can't be avoided. Food costs are going to be out of control as the input costs are going up big time for farmers, and the transportation system is being rocked by chaos in shipping patterns.
I am soooooo SUV-ed and Big Truck-ed out. I hate the $%^&* things. Just stop. Somehow, the marketing team convinced everyone that they need a giant ass vehicle to run basic errands & daily driving. "Wee Lihke tah siht up higher". Sure, thats solid.

So yeah, cool sports cars, coupes, etc. are all being nuked left & right. I understand they are making trilions off of these overpriced, behemoth trucks but they could still serve the enthusiast market. Bleh!
