I still can't wrap my head around the willingness to pay anything over 40k for a Corolla...at that price point there so many other options whether new or 1-2 year old used
Fully agree. End of the day it is a corolla. Its an econo car with some power slapped on. I feel the price of the base (core) edition is the most I would be willing to pay. Its barely worth MSRP. I agree that I would buy several other cars for $40k before I would spend that on a corolla.

So, do those of you who are balking at the price of the GR Corolla have the same qualms about the Civic Type R, or the similar VW Golf high end models ?

Yes, but the Corolla moreso because it’s uglier, has AWD, an engine with too much power per cylinder for me to trust it, and I’ve never been impressed with Toyota’s ability to tune for feel. Honda’s not what it used to be, but I’d have more confidence in them. Still, though, I think the regular model is overpriced, never mind the Type R. VW you’d have to pay me to own. Out of the three, the Corolla is probably the better bet for future value due to low production, but I don’t buy cars for investments and if I did, that would make it a garage queen and I’d want something attractive if I’m just going to be staring at it for years.

The CTR is barely at the price point I'm willing to pay for an economy based platform. But the Civic/CTR has a much better interior than the Corolla so it can somewhat get away with it. With the GR Corolla you are paying for performance, so when you're not off road or on the track and just driving it on the street, how much value are you getting out of it? IMO the Golf R sort of gets away with it because it has a slightly more upscale reputation than Honda/Toyota. That said, I wouldn't buy one because I just dont trust VW's reliability

ABSOLUTELY...!! The golf R I feel justifies the cost better than the rest. The civic and corolla cost more than they should. If the same cars wore a different badge they would cost way less. You are paying the fan boy markup.

My complaint with the Corolla is that I buy something like the 86 for it’s ā€œspecialnessā€, and that has a lot of aspects. The GR Corolla is undoubtedly special with the hand reinforced chassis, crazy power train, and rally homologation heritage carried over from the Yaris.

However, it also misses on a lot of points. The weight distribution, looks, RWD dynamics, and seating position are part of the sports car experience. I was really on the fence about it until reviews started rolling out, saying it’s a great car but drives like a fast FWD hatchback with sporty suspension and AWD tacked on. Makes sense, because that’s exactly what it is.

To me, that’s not a sports car and misses that je ne sais quoi I look for in a vehicle. At the end of the day, it’s hard to compete with a bespoke chassis sports car.

it's also very much still a Corolla inside with the nicer additions being a sportier digital cluster ('23 XSE is fully digital now too) and alcantara seats (in the Circuit/Morizo at least), but otherwise it's basically the same as an XSE in there, which is to say not as nice as the GR86/BRZ. But they had to keep costs down somehow so...

The most common complaint I see in reviews is that there is no armrest. Who does that !?
Ha sadly the first gen twins didn't have an armrest in the middle, was actually kind of tragic now that I think about it....10 years later Toyota hasn't learned that Americans need a place to relax their arm when we aren't street hoonin' pretending to be the late Ken Block. RIP KEN
