Hi everyone, nice to join the group. This has helped me immensely in motivating me to pull the trigger and put a deposit down on this years premium MT in pavement color. I just wanted to check here as well as my current deposit is still refundable if a price of the following is good for the current market. (I’ve seen some say they’ve been quoted upwards of 40K
MSRP $33705 - 155 (dealer adjustment) + 988 (dealer fee) + 6.25% MA ($2,158.62) + $401 (DMV) = Estimated OTD $37,097.62

thanks in advance for any feedback!

These stealers! From February 2024 to April 2024, dealers around NYC (including CT, NJ) had an adjustment of almost 8-10K bringing the GR86 Trueno edition up to 48-50K OTD (mainly including the GR exhaust, subwoofer. which I wanted).
I told them to call me if they wanna sell without any adjustment and continued my search. I found my Trueno in Syracuse, NY (300 miles) with no adjustment and a standard $175 dealer fee in NY. Was one of the most enjoyable trips of the family. we went one car and came back two :)

If you don't mind driving to middle-of-nowhere CT, I'd recommend checking out Dowling Toyota in Litchfield. I got my 23 MT GR86 there and they don't do market adjustments and never charge dealer fees. The only downside is that it's a tiny dealership without much inventory so I had to wait about a month and a half for them to get a car in stock.

Be willing to walk away. "Market adjustments" and "dealer fees" are bullshit. In CA we have limits on the fees. I paid $85 Doc prep (the max allowed), $33 electronic registration fee (better than going to the DMV), $460 in various state fees (all legit), plus about $3,000 in sales tax. They want to sell you a car. They know we have the internet and forums like this, but they want to sell you a car. They don't make any money if they don't.

The sales tax and state/gov't fees are not really negotiable, so just concentrate on the price of the car. They get it for an invoice price, which you can look up. Tell them you don't want any dealer extras, like protective film. I was told that costs about $20 total and they charge $200. They won't take it off, but you can negotiate the price down.

When we bought our Toyota minivan, we had another minivan all ready to go at another dealer, but it had extras we didn't need or want. We went on a whim to a closer one and found a minivan that was more like what we wanted. It was marked up $10,000 and had $3,000 of extra crap we didn't need or want. When the price got close to the one at the other dealer, we told them this is our final offer or we'll walk and got get the other one. We got the car for about $2,500 over sticker, plus fees and tax.

This is a business transaction for sellers, but for buyers it's emotional.

The other thing to keep in mind is that they will try to sell you extra junk and services when you meet the finance manager after you thought everything was done but signing the paperwork. Just say no to paint protection, extended warranties, key fob protection, tire protection and whatever else they try to con you into buying. Don’t even ask questions about the fees. Just say no. Once, I asked a few questions to amuse myself. It took hours longer. They thought I would buy something if they just sold it hard enough.

My favorite response when they tell me I need an extended warranty is to tell them my last car was a Toyota and I never needed an extended warranty with a Toyota. I may have made a mistake by buying a _. I think I need to just buy a new Toyota. I would like to cancel this contract. They quickly decide that I in fact don’t need an extended warranty.

The demand isn't as crazy as it was for them back in 2022/2023, so they shouldn't feel the need to charge over SRP/MSRP for that reason. They are just charging over because they think they can. A lot of dealerships don't charge over, and a lot do. When I got my GR86 in 2023, there wasn't any fees or additional charges, and the doc fee was $300. I have an allocation for a Hakone and they aren't charging me over either. Find a dealership that doesn't, even if it means waiting a bit.
