Question about auto/racing gloves

Hey everyone,

I have a question about those who do autocross or do weekend drives.

I have had my BRZ for about a month now and I found it interesting that the steering wheel feels a lot smoother than my previous 86. not sure if its because its newer, and I just got used to the wear of the 86 when I had it. However, it just feels much different. Currently, I am in the breaking in stages with about 500 miles on it.

I plan to take the car out for a drive through the canyon roads sometime soon before the weather heats up. I was thinking about getting some basic driving gloves. I know many on here do autocross,., but for those who just do occasional canyon runs, do you have/use driving gloves?

Any recommendations would be appreciated. I just need something temporary while the steering wheel wears out and I can invest in better gloves.
I would (at some point) like to do an autocross event.

Thanks

I got some Simpson racing gloves, but I only use them at autox just to keep the sunscreen/sweat/bug spray/etc off my steering wheel. I've never used gloves on the street, but our local roads are mostly straight and boring.

I'm far from the fastest in my class, so whoever works the starting line probably gets a chuckle out of my gear vs results if they're paying attention. 😅

Once my steering wheel looks a bit glossy and feels slippery from my skin oils, some all purpose cleaner and a microfiber cleans it right up and it feels brand new again.

I just wear some cheap mechanic gloves when I do trackdays/autocross since my hands get sweaty. I have FIA/SFI rated race gloves, but they're annoying to take on and off for normal trackdays so I only use them when they're required for lemons races

I don't wear gloves for canyon driving, but agree with you about the texture of the gen 2 steering wheel feeling different. Hasn't gone away for me at 18k miles. The texture has a bit of softness to it like foam or alcantara rather than the more slick leather feel of gen 1. I'm used to it now, but it is an interesting change.

I use a Sparco Meca, basically a mechanic glove. Only on track, to keep consistency on the wheel to hand grip.
Any thin gloves with a little bit of grip works fine for this level.

if you step up, then you need a fire proof, strong one. Bur those normally isolate you from feeling the car.

I'm not ashamed to admit I use race car driving gloves in all my vehicles. Including my motor home. I've been wearing them for driving for 15 plus years.

Race gloves are precurved for less strain in your fingers (less bunching) and have grip texture on fingers for that super smooth leather steering wheel on the 23 gr86. Mine also allow for cell phone and touch screen operation.

The best part are the first two fingers have hi-viz markings for point bys and other hand signals.

Ymmv.

Having your car catch on fire tends to change your opinion about wearing safety gear. Changing brake pads while the rotors are still glowing tends to reinforce your safety gear choices being not dumb.

Still I get it.

Golf gloves come in black color and left/right models. A recent purchase netted 3 gloves for $25.
