JDM Axle back exhaust - any reviews or owners???

Although I like my MBRP axle back I might want to change it out in the spring. So, I saw this JDM branded axle back:

Its expensive but thats OK if its well made & has a good sound. The MBRP sounds great in certain ranges but has a little too much off throttle boom for my liking. I like the axle back idea versus a Cat-back so Id like to stick with that type. I know the HKS Legamax is also in the running but that might be a little too tame!

Just curious if anyone has this specific exhaust and what they think of it. Drone, off throttle boom, etc.

Axle back kits rarely have great sound. Its hard when mixing and matching components. The OEM resonators are designed for the OEM muffler. Any aftermarket company is just going to slap one of their brand mufflers on their and call it a day. There is no actual sound tuning to adjust frequency like OEM. The sound is going to be whatever it is based on the parts they have readily available to throw on there. Catback kits tend to have a bit more development and tuning done. That gives the manufacturer the opportunity to pair the right resonator(s) to the right muffler. Considering how insanely priced some axle back kits are I see no reason to choose that over a full catback. If you end up chasing added power in the future all the rest of that exhaust will need an upgrade anyways.

I’m happy with the HKS Legamax muffler.
  • Fills bumper cut out and extends to end of bumper.
  • Is a box design so less air flow disruption in theory
  • Nice sound, not too loud
  • No drone
  • Not much lighter than OEM
  • Not best value for $$
But it’s true an axle back is more expensive for what you get.

Fortunately there’s lots of exhaust on the used market so trying different ones isn’t terribly difficult.

For what it's worth, the JDM TRD axel back exhaust (quad pipe) has a really nice sound. Something I only realized when my friend - who has the same exhaust as me - arrived in an underground parking lot. Holy shit, the bass. I thought it was coming from his sub, until he gave it a few revs haha. You don't hear a ton from inside the car, but outside?... wowser.

Probably not a useful review, given you're talking about the Subaru JDM exhaust, and they don't have a bumper option compatible with a quad. I just wanted to wax about my exhaust for a second 😅

I have read the same reviews about the Legamax from other owners. It seems to be a legit choice for what we call a "dad" exhaust. I skipped it first time just to keep costs down and try out something cheaper first. Its a possibility I do go with the Legamax though. Maybe. :)

I guess - but my MRBP axle-back under most circumstances does actually sound good to me and from what Ive been told outside the car it has a nice rumble without being fart-canny or too obnoxious. The issues are cold start volume but thats par for almost all aftermarket exhausts & the off throttle resonance & boom I get in the 4K rpm range. There is some drone at around 2K rpm but that doesnt even bother me. Its not bad for the $360 bucks I paid for it.

I hear ya though, a full cat back probably is a better way to do this. Its possible I go that route. The Apexi sure looks like a quality unit & also has Helmholtz units on it to control drone.

Exhaust is one of the easiest mods to remove and sell/buy used, to mitigate any loss or cost from switching systems.

If you can afford one exhaust system new or used you can likely just remove to sell and try another with out much out of pocket expense.
Thats true but there is still labor involved, selling old ones, storing, them etc. That gets old quick I bet. I only want to do this once more so if I decide to change out the MBRP it has to be the right exhaust! ;)
