Just finished up starlights on my gr86. Never seen anyone else do this to the new gen yet, so heres my take on it. Posting for questions of people who are looking to do something similar. Ill post more photos after work 👍👍

its not the most difficult think but was definitely time consuming. If you have pry tools, itll be a whole ton easier. You need to take off the a pillar completely and the b and c pillar partially. Since i didnt have anything to go off of, taking the headliner off itself took about 2-3 hours through trail and error. And when you take the headliner off, it doesnt fit through the doors or trunk without risking creasing. So its difficult reaching inside and poking holes in the middle while squirming around.

 

Youtuber Chris Borges has done it months ago. Still cool if you are into that kind of thing. 👍

My point is that I will be interested to learn if transmission selection has any bearing on selection of car modifications. For example, I drive a stick and focus on modifications which tend to improve performance aspects of the car, and not just cosmetic upgrades which may be appealing, but does nothing performance wise. Camps are stick and auto - the question I‘m asking is, “Do drivers who select manual transmissions tend to buy performance upgrades more or less than folks who bought cars with an automatic?”

 

The question I'm asking is, "Do drivers, who select manual transmissions, select manual transmissions out of a deep-seated fear of being called inadequate if they don't drive a car with a stick?"

 

😂 Im sure there are some of those. For me it is an honest preference. I have a mix of manuals and autos pretty much at all times. It just so happens that the autos are driven by my wife 99% of the time. I "could" drive them whenever I want. Hell the 2 automatics I have right now will blow the doors off of my BRZ, but I still dont prefer them. A boring drive to work is much less boring everyday when I can slam some gears and make obnoxious noises fly out my tailpipes.
My other reason is from a competitive standpoint. When racing in any form....
street, autocross, circuit track, drag racing, etc if you ask me you take all the sport out of when driving an automatic. The gear changes while accelerating, braking, cornering is what makes all the difference while racing. When the car does all that for you, I cant consider you a sportsman. If you beat me in an automatic... you really didnt, your car beat me. If in equal cars you out trail brake and heel toe me, my hat goes off to you. If all you had to do was push the throttle, brake and steer I cant take it seriously.

 

@TRU-BOOST I get it but if using paddles isn't racing then F1 isn't racing, amiright? Just because you're committed to outmoded technology doesn't mean the rest of us need to follow along just so you remain competitive and relevant.

 

Still disagree. Its like going to an archery competition and there is a guy there shooting a sniper rifle with a scope at the long range targets. Sure "its easier" and its "more accurate" but did he demonstrate any actual skills? Its the same concept that most auto "racers" use to justify their car being "faster than a manual". In many cases it absolutely is, they arent lying. But its like winning with a massive handicap advantage. When you dont have to do the most difficult part of the competition I have a hard time calling that a win. I guess something like F1 where they all drive glorified automatics that can be ok because it evens the playing field. In my eyes if you cant beat me while driving a manual.... you cant beat me.
Not trying to poop on anyones personal choice. Everyone has their preference. I prefer to row gears even in Chicago rush hour traffic. And as a competitor I like the contest to be between the drivers not so much the cars.

 

It's really not possible (OK, it's possible, but pointless) to judge other people's aesthetic choices. I try to be enthused for the person, to support their enthusiasm! It's not validating or agreeing with their aesthetic sense to say, "Awesome!"; all you're doing is acknowledging. "You love it, and I love that you love it!" MOAR FUN

 

Maybe I'm weird, but I thought the point of racing was not to prove driver prowess rather it was to cross the finish line first. In any case, I wish you all the best in your racing career. When you're standing on the podium, I can say, "Hey, I know that dude! It's @TRU-BOOST from gr86.org. Dang, I guess he was right all along about manuals!"

It's interesting that manual owners constantly bring up the subject of transmission choice but auto owners almost never do. I don't think it's because auto owners are embarrassed about owning an auto; it's because manual owners are religious about man-handling their sticks and can't help proselytizing about it.

 

Although not remotely the same thing, I do a lot of sim racing, through a mix of auto and manual cars depending on how I feel on a particular day. There's certainly an added challenge driving stick, particularly rev matching, but it becomes muscle memory really quickly. But I will maintain that the hardest part about racing (or, really, hot lapping) isn't operating the car's transmission, but rather throttle, brake, and steering inputs. Finding the right line, entering corners at the right speed, exiting correctly, etc, are all significantly harder than changing gears.

(And tomorrow I'm picking up my MT GR86, because my last 3 card have been auto and I miss driving stick )

 

I have two crushed discs in my lower back. Long term use of a manual used to put me in bed for weeks at a time, until I discovered what was causing it. I had to move to automatics and I have been driving them exclusively for about 15 years. I decided to go with a manual this time, because I noticed that the clutch is much easier to push than the cars I drove 15 years ago. I am really, really hoping I can pull this off and stay with a stick because they are much more fun, for me personally. But if I can’t, I can’t and that’s just the way it is.

You have no idea why someone is driving an automatic and it honestly doesn’t matter. If there is some moral high ground in your head for not, great. But this constant crapping on automatic drivers from a position of perceived superiority or purity is odious and antiquated. Just drive the damn car and enjoy it.

@Sungey - The lights look awesome. You did a great job installing them and I imagine that was a huge pain in the butt to do it right! I think that would be really cool in the back of a camper/outback sleeping area, too.

 

I had a herniated disc in my back 20 years ago. That was why I had to trade my MR2 convertible for a Prius. The only thing that helped was acupuncture, and I tried EVERYTHING. I’ve had my MT GR86 since March, and so far, I’m good. The seats in the GR86 are nice and supportive😊

 

That is awesome! I pick mine up this month, so I am pretty stoked!

 

It's disappointing, again, that we've taken a well-executed, from-scratch mod, and turned it into yet another 6AT vs 6MT slapfight. There was no reason to even mention transmission type in this thread. All we've accomplished is hijacking a space where @Sungey should feel safe being proud of a project they obviously put a lot of time and effort into.

 

Wasn't really a slap fight, however it is an observation that I'm making. That's all.

 

Reasons why you get an auto are pretty varied. In all forms it's a pleasure to drive. I think in some ways auto users might wish for that tune even more than manual drivers just due to the lower gear ratios.

 

I'm really looking for that trans tune to unlock the downshift range to redline, instead of with a 1500 rpm buffer.

 

Personally I think it looks dope!

Silly question and might have already been asked/answered but how many lights did you use? I'm looking to do it in my '24 86 rn and trying to get an idea of how many I wanna actually put it, what would be too little/too much in a sense!
