GR86 Oil Filter

Recently had my oil changed at a Toyota dealership for the break-in procedure and checked under the hood but noticed a Subaru filter. I know from the factory that a Subaru filter is there, but does this mean that my Toyota uses Subaru filters instead of Toyota filters when changing oil on 86s?

The car has a Subaru engine, so there are a lot of Subaru parts in there. Toyota dealers will stock Toyota-packaged versions of those parts, but they’re still Subaru parts. Given that both companies’ names are right there on top of your engine in plain view, I don’t think they’re trying to keep it a secret.

In this thread, a fellow forumite who happens to work at a Toyota dealership posted the accompanying pic.

As a few others have mentioned, Toyota now sells the Tokyo Roki Subaru Filter and honestly this is a huge +1 and win in terms of convenience and also for those of you who take your car in for scheduled services instead of DIY. For the outgoing model, Toyota sold their own oil filter and I can't really comment on the quality of them, I never ran them on my 13 or 18.

The tokyo roki is quite in fact the BEST filter you can run on these cars. They are competitively priced with other "premium" filters and before you used to have to go to Subaru or Amazon to buy them.

It's a bit confusing, but don't forget that your GR is a Subaru at the end of the day. Most if not any OEM part you buy for this car with a few exclusions are going to be stamped by Subaru. The same way if you were going to buy a Jaguar F-Type, you would see a lot of OEM parts stamped by Ford as it is a Mustang S550 Chassis.

This is pretty common across the auto industry.

Be happy you got that filter. The dealer I went to for service gave me some off brand filter that wasn’t oem size height wise. Likely not such a big deal but still, I’m sure a lot of these smaller dealerships have never got a new 86 in their shops. My oil was also overfilled to what appeared to be last gens spec.

When I booked my next service at local Toyota dealership, they told me that they had no technicians who were trained and qualified to work on my car and that I should go to another dealership. I had already had my oil changed there so I wanted to check if at least that had been done properly. The oil filter installed was a black Toyota brand with part # 90915 - YZZS1 and does not match any of the part #s above so I think that it is the wrong one, for 86 FR-S 2017-2020.

Please confirm that I have the wrong oil filter before I march into the dealership and raise hell. Likelihood of engine damage?

You might want to hold off on raising hell. According to this screenshot auditorjazz posted in another thread, the 90915-YZZS1 filter is a currently listed part for the GR86.

If I’m not mistaken, it’s the filter for the previous gen cars, and spec-wise it’s extremely close to the one that was originally spec’d by both Subaru and Toyota for the gen 2 cars — it’s just a little taller.

Thanks for confirming that my oil filter is indeed the one for first gen, not second gen ,GR86. I did a bit more reading on the post you sent and am a little disturbed to read:

"The new Subaru filter (AA170) uses a stiffer bypass valve spring leading it to open less. Which is a good thing because, every time that that valve opens crap that the filter has caught gets released into the engine and we all know there is a bunch of RTV inside that filter. Now that I think of it, this should be something added to the list of questions we should bee asking when we see blown engines."

I am thinking that I paid full price for service 2 which should include the right oil filter (and don't even get me started that I am at least half a quart over-filled) so I would like to bring my car in and try to get Toyota to replace the gen 1 filter with the gen 2 and put in the proper amount of oil this time. Wish me luck!

Well, yes and no.

It is the filter for the first-gen cars, but according to that screenshot, Toyota says it’s also an appropriate filter for the second-gen GR86.

And for whatever it’s worth, I believe some BRZs shipped with the taller first-gen filters. Part number ending in 130 instead of 170 if I remember correctly.

Do we have confirmation that there really is a difference in bypass valve pressure? Subaru filters were known to have high bypass pressure ratings years before the second-gen cars came to market.

I actually just recently had this hiccup with my local dealer which unfortunately means I'll no longer be buying oil filters from them. Toyota superseded the true oem subaru filter (Tokyo Roki / Black Subaru 15208AA170)

It bothers me that they're showing the 90915YZZS1 as the right filter because that for sure 110% is the filter that Toyota used to sell / does sell for the Scion FRS & Gen 1.5 Toyota 86. As far as I'm aware you can't run that filter on a 15-21 WRX so in my mind it being backwards compatible with our cars doesn't make any sense. It's not even the same size.

The Tokyo Roki (Subaru Black) is lightyears beyond the YZZS1 in quality. Hold them and inspect them back to back and you'll see what I mean. People on older subaru forums have cut open those Tokyo Roki filters and they are extremely overengineered for $7 without even considering the potential differences in bypass pressure.

TLDR - Buy from Subaru directly for a 22 BRZ or from Amazon using this link. Document your self service on the MyCarFax Car Care app with photos and receipts.

Now that my free services are done, I do plan to do my own oil changes (less than half the cost with way better oil). I got a FREE limited lifetime warranty on the engine and transmission from the dealer via AGWS when I bought the car, and they want verifiable receipts etc if I should need to file a claim. I planned to just fill out a form similar to what the dealers use and staple receipts for filter and oil to it and file them away. I also have used the Toyota app to add service entries before, as a way to track things digitally, but never mycarfax. I too think a photo is a good idea. With AGWS‘s reputation, I may need to video the whole thing and then get it notarized. 😂
