Owners are accountable 100%. Its the essence of ownership. Toyota’s warrantee coverage is at their discretion and legal obligations.

They dont need our help. We need car companies we can rely on.
Warranties are black and white with terms laid out in writing. The problem comes from dealerships or some secretary at headquarters thinking they get to add conditions like "you were driving above the speed limit" or "you arent supposed to rev over 6000rpm".
Im sure one of that is in the warranty literature. Anyone who has a legitimate failure and accepts that as a final verdict is a fool. Any decent auto lawyer will win that case. They cant just make shit up to save money. I think most of these instances however have owners that know damn well the failure was their fault for one reason or another. In those cases its not worth going to court because they will lose for sure. So what do they do instead...? Turn to the internet hoping to stir up enough shit that the manufacturer fixes it just to shut them up.

I agree. There is a limit what a lawyer will accept though. Under 3-5k, it may not be worth it.

could be a matter of protecting where their bread is buttered. Remember they gave up on the LFA because it wasnt a big seller.

the engine blow up anxiety that comes with this platform will likely keep me away from anymore Toyota performance products. I knew what had gone on in the past, but the constant pace of new reports and Toyotas treatment of owners is hard to dismiss.

I’d rather be the prick in a euro car than some dope left holding the bag with a blown FA24.

Sucks, dont wanna look at the 86 today.
They gave up on the LFA because it wasn't selling at all. It took well over a decade before it officially sold out.

From what I remember, they lost money on each vehicle sold too.

The blow up anxiety really stems from the flat engine design. But, I also think Toyota has been rushing products, at the price of quality, for basically a decade, and that also includes Lexus products.

Frankly, in my mind, I treat my GR as if it was a more forgiving Rx-7. I make sure it's warmed up, more than 100* engine temp before moving out; not breaking 3k rpm for st least 5-10 minutes for the real warm up, and then drive more spirited.

Same here. That's why I live in track mode, to watch the temps better.

It's absolutely a two way street here. I'm all for fairness on both sides. If you've run the car bone dry that's on you absolutely. Warranty denied and I will support Toyota. If Toyota have stated that the warranty is void due to going over 6000rpm and 74mph (of which I'm yet to see anything to substantiate this other than what is on Reddit btw) then it is odd. Just state the car was not serviced properly, which is the truth.

Others have raised good points on owner accountability. Until I see something official from Toyota and not Reddit (which is the septic tank of the internet) I can't form an opinion on this. Like Tru said, appears to be a lot of omitted details.

What's up with the recent 75 and 85 mph warranty claim denials from Toyota? First a US GRC and now a South Korean GR86. If these are true, almost seems like a directive coming down from Toyota corporate.

For warranty purposes, it seems like buying the Subaru or BMW versions might be the way to go. If you asked me 5 years ago, I would have thought Toyota would have been the brand with the robust, no questions asked warranty.

won't lie, a lot of these dumb gr86 engines blowing and warranty denied also played part in me selling my car, if my engine blew and I got denied warranty, I couldn't fix it. but I drove mine like a grandma so it unlikely wouldn't of ever impacted me honestly

I would have bought a Subaru instead for sure, especially with the bad Toyota dealership service I get. The one thing they do right, is overfill the oil by at least half a quart.

Its all anecdotal to this point. But reports are persistent that its in the back of my mind. Its a nagging issue.

I turned off all the data sharing and permission for Toyota and deleted the app. The gawd dang remote functions dont work anyway. I havent bought a Toyota since 1999, and my son’s 2020 wasnt a perfect experience. Im starting to think Toyota is a shell of what it used to be.

They sure are. They are on the top of the leader boards for safety and reliability related TSBs and recalls. Right up there with the koreans. They are no better than any other brand these days. They are living on successes of the past.

Im sure there is a long list of omitted details. Its all too common for people to be fully responsible for a failure, then turn to the internet with a sob story. "Poor me, im a victim". If everything the internet had to say about these engine failures were true, I would have gone through a dozen engines by now. Somehow mine handles, right hand turns, never having an RTV cleaning, 100mph+ several times per week, mods, tuning, racing, etc. Either some of us have unicorn cars or there are a lot of people that are full of BS.
Where do you go 100mph+ every week?! I wanna move there! Ha! I was getting on the freeway the other day and floored it; got up to about 95 then decided I needed to slow up to match traffic.

All im saying is that people need to realize that the 86 is a reskinned subaru. It has a boxer engine so they should treat it as one.

I had a friend with a GR86 who told me he hates subaru. Well.. don't I have some unfortunate news for him
Has he looked under the hood? It literally says “Subaru” right on the cover.
