DRL Turn off in Tech stream

So i took my GR86 to the dealer today. One of the things on my list to have done, was to have the daytime running lights being on all the time, switched off. I don’t care for that , as I live in Florida and there’s a good bit of sun here. Every time you’re on a little hill or anything and you want to put the parking brake on that switches them off, until you release the parking break and then they come back on. I have heard LEDs on modern cars are quite expensive. So it just seems like unnecessary wear and tear on the LEDs. I prefer how it is on my 2018 Camry. The turn signal stock actually has an auto position, where the DRL’s come on all the time in this position, and the actual headlights come on based on the light sensor. However, there is a full off position on the camry, which is what I use most of the time. The owners manual on the GR 86 says this is a dealer select item to be on or off. Except for Canada. I live in the US, so they should be able to be turned off according to the owners manual. The tech tells me there’s no option to turn it off. Has anyone here with the Toyota version of the car tried to have this done? how about BRZ owners? I’m wondering if I he didn’t want to be bothered,( because warranty work makes techs little money) or if it really can’t be done?

I wouldnt have thought so either. Till i started hearing these stories of people getting charged insane prices on other vehicles. Not sure about these on ours. I know of one personally. Not onlineA woman i dated had a friend where she worked that paid close to $3,000 to replace a failed assembly on the rear if her SUV. It was a GM vehicle i believe. Not a mercedes, lol. LEDS generally have a crazy long life on a spec sheet, but ive had several fail in my home. There is extra circuitry in those that probably fails. Not sure on cars . Hopefully its not an issue on ours

Before picking up my BRZ I had the dealer turn off the DRLs and do a few other things*. Now if I want them on I turn the headlight knob to the "parking lights" setting. That turns on the DRLs and the tail lights, which seems better to me for the times I want DRLs, like a very overcast day. It probably also turns on the side markers by the from wheels but I haven't checked.

*I'm also glad I had them make it so when you set the HVAC to blow out the windshield vents the A/C doesn't automatically come on. I can turn on A/C myself if I want that air dried. Sometimes I just want to direct the air out those vents to get fresh air in the cabin without it blowing on me.

Lol, i ageee with that sentimemt I I wouldnt do that, or anything like it ..DRLs add nothing to my enjoyment when the sun is blazing here in Florida.and ive heard of these light cluster units costing
thousands, which i wouldnt want to spend. Id rather have those cool wrap arounds working at night when it would be more important to me.

The stats disagree.

  • In one North American study of fleet vehicles, researchers found those with DRLs on during daytime hours had 7% fewer crashes.
  • In another study, specific to Minnesota between 1995–2002, researchers found that the crash rate among 184,637 vehicles without standard DRLs was 1.73 times higher than for those with the lights.
  • The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) also found DRLs reduced:
    • “Opposite direction daytime fatal crashes by 5 percent.”
    • “Opposite direction/angle daytime non-fatal crashes by 5 percent.”
    • “Non-motorists, pedestrians and cyclists, daytime fatalities in single-vehicle crashes by 12 percent.”
    • “Daytime opposite direction fatal crashes of a passenger vehicle with a motorcycle by 23 percent.”

I'm the complete opposite. I want them on all the time as it adds to the look of the vehicle but it's stupid to have the corresponding side turn off when that signal light goes on except when the headlights are on. Then they're always on regardless of left or right signal. Looks like something is wrong with the car when you're using your signals during the day when that drl is off with the turn signal blinking.

This is disappointing, I bought the dauntless device here: BUNDLE - DauntlessOBD Enhanced + 2022+ GR86/BRZ ASC CAN Adapter . I was able to turn off the DRLs being on all the time but when the stalk is set to the DRL option and i do want them on, the DRL still appear off(really dim light appears, not full bright). I just set the oem setting back to DRL light on all the time as it doesn't make sense to have the DRLs be very dim when choosing it on the stalk.
