A bit more about the new Toyota Celica

Interesting in terms of how this would influence the whole GR product line in a couple of years.

True two door coupe but not a “pure” sports car design. The range topping model will apparently have the GR-Four AWD system from the GR Yaris and GR Corolla but adapted to a brand new 2.0L four cylinder turbo engine that won’t be a hybrid gas-electric.

My own speculation: Presumably then other trim levels of the Celica model line will have hybrid options that Toyota is pushing in general… just not in a range topping “Celica GT-Four” model. That way they can show the Celica lesser trims as being more efficient to balance the model name’s fuel economy and emissions.

No mention in this video about any news on the 3rd generation GR86 and whatever ultimate form it will take which I also find interesting since the GR Starlet, S-FR, MR2 and Supra are all mentioned.

As said in other threads, the evidence mounting for the twins being axed in the next 2-3 years is pretty high at this point unless you're one of the people that prefers to ignore the rumors (Best Car) that have accurately predicted the A90 Supra, GR86, GRY, and GRC lol. The rumors always start off with just the nameplate and a bunch of nonsense early on, but typically about 2 years before the car releases to the public they have everything (drivetrain specs, interior and exterior renders that are 90% match etc).
-GR representatives hinting a couple of years ago about whether or not people might like a GR sport sedan.

-A GRMN Prius prototype debuts… but it’s not really what they were talking about

-Bestcar reports a few months ago that the GR86 will have a 3rd generation but using the soon to be outgoing Lexus IS sedan platform as a basis that will be heavily downsized and simplified and with a G16E engine.

-Toyota not so subtly highlights a 1998-2005 Altezza RS200 sport sedan in their GR anime series used to promote their brand.

-Bestcar then confusingly releases more details on the 3rd Gen GR86 coming out as a coupe and sedan… but this is before we hear them report on the S-FR extensively and Celica extensively. Toyota source was quoted in the article as saying something to the effect of a sedan being more practical for a wider range of buyers.

-We already know that this current generation GR86/BRZ was the stopgap facelift revision. It is too cost prohibitive to redesign the current chassis to meet new EU crash safety and global emissions and fuel economy regulations when a whole new car could be designed instead. It probably won’t be sold after the 2025 model year for these reasons. Toyota wanted the current model to hold us over until their next models come out.

All of this to me points toward a new successor to the 98-05 Altezza RS200 (aka Lexus IS 1st gen with a motorsport style four cylinder).

Ironically the 98-05 Altezza sedan was actually the successor to the original 83-87 Corolla GT-S AE86. Toyota loves nostalgia revival.

GR offering a RWD sport sedan in their lineup makes sense with the SFR, Celica, MR2 and Supra being all two door cars.
