I pulled the trigger on a car phone holder today. It was $39.00 at Best Buy. I have researched them for a while and came up with this one. I think it looks clean and is out of the way. Here are some pics of the installation. I inserted a little black plastic piece from an old wire bracket to hold the trim apart for the phone cable. The cable is not pinched and can slide freely. See the last pic to see the piece I cut out and the bracket it came from.

I am adding some more photos to show how I got the phone cable routed up to the dash.
I ran the phone cable from the center console cupholders to inside the dash.
The first image shows the cable plugged into the console's USB box. You can pry the black cover off the USB box to install it back into the cupholder area.
The next few images show the cable running back through the center console making its way out to the phone holder.

And then I tried to drill out the shift knob to eliminate the gap.......didn't go as planned lol. Now I have to try to find a thread insert for it. On the plus side, with that chrome trim gone the reverse lockout with work without the need for any kind of rubber grommet.

That looks really clean, I'll be getting my BRZ in the next few weeks hopefully. Something I'll definitely be looking into to - how is the apple car play if you're using that?
Apple CarPlay is pretty good. It lets you access most of the basic apps on your phone like calls, texts, music, podcasts, and GPS. It does pair them down to be "safe" in a car. For example, all texts are read out to you and you cannot see the text on the screen. Another example is in Amazon Music I could not search for a song I wanted to play by typing. I guess I could use Siri or Alexa. Typing may open up if the car is stopped, I was moving at the time. This is another reason I think I am going to really like the new phone holder. I will be able to access anything on my phone if I need to.

Today I definitely made Red Green proud. Never underestimate the power of ghetto lol. I managed to remove the chrome trim off the knob which helps to clear the reverse lockout. Then after I overdrilled the knob by accident, I had to find a new option to get the knob to stick and stay on the shifter shaft threads. Being an electrician lol, I wrapped the shaft threads in electrical tape, then grabbed some 18 gauge single strand wire, coiled it up and insert that into the shift knob, twisted it on and she holds lol. Much better than how I had it before.
