Welcome to the forum. I think it's just to protect the wheels from getting anything on it they don't want, since they were sculpting the lip with clay.

Though I like front lips on these cars, I'm waiting for something more subtle, I really like the 2016 RS 2.0 front lip.

If the outgoing gen is any indication, I'd say the new GR86 with that kit at stock ride height should look good.
