I'm sure there are examples of Toyota denying warranties for cases that should be approved, but I don't think this is one of them.
In my book it'd be fine for Toyota to deny a warranty for past abuse like this. It'd just be super nice if they actually said that. "Hey idiot, you abused the car during break-in. No warranty for you." Instead of some vague stuff about "the way you drove it" or whatever. Give out some specifics!
showing your dealer a track video is one hell of a decision

So far I have not tracked my GR86 and I plan to make a decision once the warranty is expired based on other peoples' experiences whether I will ever track it. I know there are people who have tracked their GR86s and not had any problems, but I don't trust Toyota to cover me if I'm one of the unlucky people with an engine failure. For now, my car is a street only car and it will not see one minute of track time.

I think Toyota is cheap and not a performance brand. I will track (and trust) my Ford on track because I think Ford understands enthusiasts and builds their engines and drivetrains to withstand abuse. I don't really trust the quality of Subaru engines. Being that Toyota is trying to get out of warranty coverage any way they can, it seems to me that Toyota doesn't really trust Subaru engines either.
I always think the "im going to wait until my warranty is over" line doesnt make sense. By waiting until its over you guarantee that if it breaks you are paying for it. At least if its under warranty you get to flip a coin to see if they cover it or not. 50% chance of them paying is better than 100% chance they wont in my book.

I feel for the owner of this video. He was not really driving it that hard,. people push their GR86s harder in the freeway. Not sure what the past 19k of mile history is here but I think Toyota should honor the warranty here. If based on this video as evidence alone Toyota should honor it.
We don't have access to the black box data, and as others have said he has a history of posting about beating on the car so who really knows.

I don't think there's anywhere near enough data to say if they should or should not have covered him. But if the basis for denial is simply running on track vs previous abuse, then it should likely be covered given they have said HPDE etc does not constitute a denial alone (only timed/competitive racing events do).

I bet there prob one dealer in entire US that can read EDR (CDR) data, much less interpret it. Tool cost like $30,000 !

Porsche has counters build in that are CAN/OBD2 accessible that record over-rev events, clutch dumps and similar "abusive" driving events.

I agree. I wouldn't also be surprised if Toyota said, 'did you attend a high speed event?' if yes, then sorry you were racing warranty denied. No need to do any further work, and no need to see your video. once the video gets posted on the internet, they'll come back and say ok doesn't look you abused it, ok we will honor it. squeaky wheel gets the grease (to be seen!!) .

Yes, Porsche uses over revs as their bible. My ex 2005 997.1 C2S had 6 over rev stages which are graded 1 minor to 6 alarming/ no warranty and don’t buy. They even had over rev logging in 1998 996 series. Hard to believe new manual cars don’t have this technology.
Aren't most Porsches equipped with dry sumped oiling systems as well? Their boxer flat sixes are always tracked hard & never hear of one blowing up.

Is there an aftermarket dry sump system that can be bolted onto the Subaru flat fours? I imagine a dry sump can help with the oil return issues & improve reliability during hard cornering

I know nothing about GR86's other than they look pretty cool.
Have never sat in one nor have ever driven one or a FRS/BRZ/GT86 yet haha!

He's a big name YouTuber who has blown up two 911 engines on track. Driving pretty sedately as well. 😅

Could screenshot it and email to yourself to post off your phone. Its 2023 and we don't need to be looking at terrible quality pictures of screens when everything has a screenshot function. Be the change you want to see in the world
I’m gonna send you a terrible quality picture of a screen with my nuts on it.

996.1&2 and 997.1 Carreras are wet sump
996 and 997 GT3's and Turbo's use the Mezger motorsport derived engine which is dry sumped.

I tracked my 997.1 and had no issues (I knew of:)) but they can have the same starvation problems as the GR/BRZ twins.

The GT86 race series they have in Australia and around the world, don't seem to have oil starvation issues, that i've heard of. Maybe they use a baffled sump but they are pretty close to stock

Oh ok that's great to know. My S2K & Gen 3 Hemi `Cuda are wet sumped as well which is adequate for the track. I run an Accusump on the `Cuda but nothing beats a dry sump when it comes to high g force cornering & oiling engine bearings.

Like I stated I know nothing about the Toyota/Subaru twins & never driven them before, just wondering if an aftermarket dry sump kit is available?
