'Sport' mode when in manual shift mode?

Question for other AT owners. Is there any point to using 'Sport' mode when shifting 'manually' other than having it turn on/increase the fake engine noise? I know that it will change the shift points if you are letting it shift for itself, but I use the manual mode 100% of the time, so I'm choosing my own shift points.

For real fun mode hold down the Traction Control button for about five seconds.
That's a good question, which essentially is whether or not Sport Mode does anything other than adjust the automatic shift points and increase fake engine noise. I guess I assumed it may alter throttle response, but there's nothing in the owner's manual to indicate that's the case.

I do know you have to pull the gear selector over to Manual Mode in order for the transmission to hold your manual shifts, regardless of driving mode. If you leave it in D, it will revert back to automatic.

I use Sport Mode in D and let it shift automatically for driving in heavy traffic where I need to maneuver briskly and keep all of my attention on the traffic. I will occasionally override the Sport Mode gear selection, for example I will paddle upshift when it's clear ahead so it stops holding a lower gear in an effort to be ready for a burst of acceleration. So for me, I would rather be in Sport Mode in D and override the transmission's selection with the paddles vs. being in Normal Mode in D and doing the same.

I neat little nugget in the owner's manual: "You can perform a skip-shift (for example, from 4th to 2nd) by operating the shift paddle twice in rapid succession."

The fake engine noise doesn't intrude on my driving Zen. I had it turned off in software at the dealer before I even left the lot.

I remember reading a post from Subaru that sport mode quickens shift times. In my experience the shift times are all over the place. It seems that if the throttle input is high and the RPS are high the shifts are faster than when not. At lower RPMS, sometimes they are smooth and quick, other times, not so much. On another but related track, do your shifters make a clunk and rattle a bit shifting functions? Particularly from D to M. The shift lever just seems to hit a wall and clunk with a bit of rattle. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. My dealer tells me this is normal but I remember it being different. more solid, a thousand miles ago.

I’ve never noticed the flip to M to make a clunk, on the other hand I don’t use M that much. Sport mode automatic for me most of the time

Thanks for the input. I use the manual shifts most of the time. I hope others will offer their experience.

Regarding manual mode, I do wish the +/- shift direction wasn't backwards from what it should be. The pattern is correct on my 124 and I'm used to that. I can't get used to pushing forward for upshift and pulling back for downshift in the BRZ.

I am accustomed to using the paddles. Does your shifter make a clunk when shifting from D-M?

There’s a pretty strong spring detent, so it does “clunk” but I don’t find that it sounds crappy or loose…it feels solid.

Thank you for that. I took my car to the dealer and they told me that the clunk was normal. There is not another BRZ in Albuquerque to compare it with so making a case with the dealer might be tricky. I will see....
Well, one thing Sport mode will do is activate the fake engine noise above 4K RPMs.

Thank you for that. I made a recording of mine but don't know how to attach it. Does yours have lateral play that can rattle a bit?

It has lateral play but it’s under spring tension and doesn’t rattle. It takes a little effort to make it rattle.

It’s now possible to upload short video clips with sound to Imgur.com. I use their phone app. You have to remember to “unmute” on the upload screen so it uploads with sound. Then just grab the share link.

One of the reasons I hate “forward to upshift” is that if you forget you are still in “D” and push forward, you will shift into “N” accidentally while your foot is planted in the throttle. Not good!

I’ve been wondering if it would be possible to switch or rewire the connectors to reverse the +/- operation.

Yeah! That worked. Sounds pretty normal to me. It might be a touch looser than mine.
yeah, that seems pretty normal, if slightly looser than mine. I shift 'manually' pretty much 100% of the time. I have not noticed much difference in shift times, smoothness whether under load, high rpm, or low rpm. Always is smooth and quick
