Got a day in June for my "free" track day. Other than sim driving, Ive never been on this track.

Anyone have experience with an 86 at Road Atlanta?

Already planning on bringing a pad/rotor setup and upgrading the brake fluid.

Consider getting the $8 crash bolts or camber bolts for the front and an alignment, there have been some stories of misaligned twins from the factory.

Would recommend at least 1.5deg of camber in the front, it greatly improves the front end of my BRZ, although it's said the BRZ is more understeer biased than the GR86, so it might upset the balance of your car.

I've been debating the camber bolts because its moving towards track toy instead of toy.

2700 miles of highway followed by 2 days of light-duty (i hope) hpde followed 2700 more miles home. Camber bolts seems excessive. :)

I would def say that the car feels understeerie with stock ps4, until I get -2.0 front camber. Now the car has -2.5 front and -2.0 rear since I have a pair of rlca. The stickier the tire compounds will be, the more cambers you need for your car. Especially the front needs more camber than usual, because we have mcpherson struts front.

I did a low speed hpde a month ago. 3rd gear mostly. Other than the oil getting warm and the oem pads going soft it wasn't bad. It was a cold day (ice on the track), so I'm not sure how relevant that will be compared to a mid June day in Atlanta. Mid 40's vs Mid 80's.

Figure I'll find a garage when I arrive. Get an oil change, bleed the brakes, swap in track pads & rotors. Then do it all again before I leave.

I'm tempted to buy a set of tires there, but new tires and unknown track seems like a bad idea

Pads and fluid is def the inital Achilles' heel. I think the stock ps4 wasn't bad, it wasn't great either 😂. But if you aren't chasing lap time, the stock ps4 is fine. Depends on where you live, I think it's best to have a set of dedicated rims/tires if you want to run 200tw.

I did an HPDE at Road Atlanta with JTI this past June and it was great. It was a really hot day and oil temps were 250-260, so keep an eye on that. The diff fluid in the car overheated and I completely destroyed a fresh set of Cabotech XP10s. Might be a good idea to swap out the diff fluid for some Motul 300V and also make sure you run some 5W30 oil. The factory 0W20 can have issues with thinning out when it gets hot. My car is an automatic so not being able to engine brake didn't do the brakes any favors. Just get a good set of track pads and run some Motul 600/660 or Castrol SRF and you'll be set. I was also running some Falken RT615K+ as well and they were amazing on track.

I've been shopping tires. Nasa has tire sponsorships with Toyo. Tempted to get a set of R1R's and run actual race tires. Then I mapped the route. meh. Street tires it is.

The oem tires weren't bad but they weren't woohoo awesome either. Have to look for a tire deal maybe swap them out for something a bit stickier.

did you bed in the carbotechs beforehand? Curious about your experience as I got the hard sell on them when I had my miata. I ran Hawk and kept hearing how much longer the xp10 would last. A single track day is pretty bad.

Don't run carbotech. They are kinda trashy, soft pads. They throw a lot of heat into the braking system, low modulation.

Most fun I have had at a 3 day event, did it when I had a C4S. After seeing a few Petit Le Mans there it was so much intense fun to drive, but walls close to the track, no room for error. Someone lost it in an E30 M3 and went into the wall backwards and crushed the trunk up to the rear window. 🙁 must have gone into turn 6 too hot and lost the back end and hit the wall on the outside between 6 and 7
i got black flagged during Sunday 'quiet hour' (I took the mufflers off the car and had tips that came right off the cats)

I have a Killer B track muffler delete (single pipe). Measured at idle is 94db, so it's going to stay home.

Going to use a sim rig to practice before heading to the track. balling my ride home would be bad.

Less than 3 months to go. Found a garage 30 minutes from the track that will let me work on the car. Going to ship out a full set of rotors & pads, along with 2 fluid swap kits. I'll be due for an oil change by the time I fet there, so it works out .

Leaning towards cryo blanks & hawk dct-60's. They tend to get hot but I've used them in the past. Need to see if there's newer tech than 10yo tech. Nasa has a hawk discount...

Installing brake ducts is on the "if have time" list along with the jackson oil cooler. Still pondering the usefulness as it's 2 track days. I can buy full coverage insurance for less money.

If you find a brake duct solution, lmk. I don't think the car needs it. But I only have been driving it at cmp during the cold weather, I feel like when we get to 90F ambient temp. Brake temp would be totally different.

Road Atlanta is super fun. That track is very gentle on brakes for the 86. There are only two large braking events at 7 and 10A with a moderate braking event at turn one. Turn three and turn four need special attention. And watch the pothole after you exit the S's at the top of the painted triangle area. Have fun!

I would highly recommend an appt at GTE (gran turismo east) when you get to atlanta for an alignment, and tires if you need. Most likely they can also take care of the fluids and brake parts for you as well. Best alignment shop in the area.
