The only reason I would sale is if another manufacturer came out with a lightweight, rwd, manual transmission, LSD, 2+2 car that performed better than the 86.

Other people, probably had life changing circumstances, or found out they just weren't about the 86 life for whatever reason.

The Alpine A110 went for sale in the US and is 50 state legal.

(basically mid engine, and even lighter)

fwiw, I would think about the B48 Supra in MT.

Edit: I won the lottery, didn't want a large garage, and opted for a CPO 992 or Cayman GTS 4.0, Lotus Elise/Evora GT, Audi RS3, and pre-ordered a GT4RS, GT3RS and use the CPO Porsche as a trade-in. I'll wait for a late model year GR86 and buy it again at that point.

Some people included their reasons in their post. After a very quick skim, some reasons include:
  • Upgrading from base to premium
  • Need more space because of the kids
  • Life changes
  • Not being driven enough

Some of those reason are prtty forward looking stupid.

"not enough space for kids".. you think you would check before plunking down cash. And changing base to premium.. hope where you live sales tax on cars are FREE - ouch.

And by far best.. you buy sporty car and then don't drive it. LOLz

Lots of reasons
1. Garage queen with low miles and may fetch a good price
2. Want to Upgrade/Downgrade to something else (zupra, corolla etc)
3. More space needed eg. back seat
4. I have too much toy cars
5. I need the money.. eg. I over extended and now have kids
6. Wife doesn't like it
7. Insurance costs are high
8. I hate to drive a sports car in the snow that's RWD
9. I lost my job
10. RTV

It's just a car one would think there's lots of "prtty forward looking" reasons that aren't stupid.

If I found a super clean 6MT previous gen M2. Or maybe for a Supra. I’m still considering trying to trade it on a 6MT Supra since the BRZ is very nearly paid off by now but I’m enjoying cheap car running costs lol
I am thinking some people are scared of the silicone RTV issue or just isn’t what they expected in the car / not happy.

I wanted a MT premium Neptune Blue GR86. Was on the wait list for a year. I never thought I’d have the chance to get a GRCorolla before the GR86 lol.

I had a chance to buy a MT Silver Supra but it had brown interior. Also $10k ADM. Sales guy couldn’t adjust price.

Also, the new Supra has an electronic ebrake so Hydraulic aftermarket is a must for drifting which is something I wanted the GR86/Supra for.

For my car progression. I’ve owned a FRS, a 86 and now my GR86.

For those of you who have never owned the outgoing model, it genuinely isn’t that far off of a driving experience displacement and design to the side.

I’ll be in a Supra or a F80 M3 in the next 12-15 months

Oh I can tell you I couldn’t care much less about the RTV issue. I wouldn’t mind having to rebuild the whole engine in my garage at 80k tbh. I work from home and have a spare car and a couple bikes so my needs for reliability are low and these things will probably be pretty reliable as far as I’d wager.

Mostly it’s that these cars are kinda meh on the highway. They’re super fun which makes up for it. But my BRZ doesn’t really like sitting cruise control pegged at 90 mph. I know I’m a niche use case but that is a significant point for me. They’re ofc a bit noisy in general and so on.

Doing 75mph on the interstate in Florida will get you run off the road and murdered.

Interesting. I find my car is happiest at those speeds.

For sure. I am just speculating why others sold theirs. I too don’t care if the engine has issues. I’ll swap or rebuild. The GRCorolla btw feels like 70 at 90 and it’s super sturdy and not a struggle for me. I definitely think every vehicle has its purpose and can’t expect it to do it all.

Lovely. I definitely want a MT Supra and or GR86 because the upgraded electronics are useful and cool.

I feel like enthusiasts are often in the boat of wanting to experience new cars often vs having a car forever. I personally am in this category. I have been through at least 6 cars in the last 4-5 years alone and have throughly enjoyed my time with every one of them. I have been on the hunt for a few different cars and if one pops up the GR86 will probably have to go. The used car market these last few years did make getting out of cars very quick and lucrative but so has owning the right car in the right trim/ color etc.

I sold mine as that was the plan from the beginning. Buy it, take it to 4 track days and enjoy it for 6 months on the street and sell it to Carvana for more than I paid for it. I liked it well enough, but just got my GR Corolla so gonna try that for a while. To me a sports car is like a motorcycle or jet ski or other toy, and most of my sports car buddies have had quite a few of them....its not like getting divorced or selling a house/land that has been in the family forever, etc. The GR86 was somewhere around my 60th car owned. Some of us crazy car guys just want to try one of everything before we hit the nursing home....

For my own personal situation, I'd genuinely be curious to discover something that would make me do such a thing. I'm a bachelor, I have a short commute, and I also have title in hand. I can't foresee something crazy that could happen to me within the next 5+ years that would pull the rug out from under me. I also do have emergency savings to account for a job loss.

I would say... something really obtuse and unrealistic. If I were to emigrate to another country such as Germany or Japan, I would absolutely let this car go then purchase a second one after my move. But I truthfully do not have any other aspirations and can't own or drive any other car. Supras, Caymans, Huracans, they do nothing for me - this is as good as it gets.

Not trying to derail the topic but I'm gonna say this right now as a Florida resident.
RTV is like COVID-19; if you just flat-out ignore it and pretend it doesn't exist, it will never be a problem for you 🤝
