Reading the oil dip stick

This is a newb question but I never had this issue with other cars when checking the oil level on the dip stick.

There’s 2 dimples on the dipstick. One side it’s pointing out the other is indented.

Which side do you use to take the reading?

On one end, the one where the dimples stick out it reads less, while the other side always reads more.

I was checking the oil today and I have no idea where the oil is going. I check like every month and have had to add more oil cause the reading was a bit low.

The reading is usually within the dimples, but it doesn’t match what I’ve been putting in. I’ve basically put 6 qts in the car at this point.

I’m due for an oil change soon, not sure if this is concerning. Never had a new car burn oil🤷🏽‍♂️. I thought the car takes 5.3qts to fill? So if I’ve put 6qts in the car? Where’d the .7qts go?

Yep. Thats a half quart low. Doesnt sound like much and under "normal" driving would be fine. That would make me super nervous on a track with the oil drainage problems we have going on.
What oil?
Motul 300v 5w30. I'll make sure to top it up when I get my car back from the body shop. Will an oil catch can help with the oil drainage problem?

Does checking it cold give an accurate reading of full? If I follow the manual and wait 5 to 10 min after running then check it might be lower than if it was completely cold. Is full actually the reading after it's been running? That would mean the full mark on the top dot when cold would actually be slightly less than full.

So I was wondering about this last week and I guess this might be useful for other people as well. I went to check my oil parked in front of the house and the coverage on the dipstick was pretty light and looked almost low on one side. My street has a very slight incline but I didn't think it would make a difference:

I then checked it in the parking lot at my job, which is properly level, and it was full. I didn't think my street would be enough of an incline to make a difference, but apparently it is.

Got my first oil change at a Toyota dealer, checked the level this morning dead cold, looks like they overfilled it, I really can't seem to get a good read and wonder if this is smear or not. I checked it yesterday when the engine was warm and sitting for 10 mins, and got just about the same mark as this morning. I was thinking the level is not so high to bother taking the car back to have them adjust. This pic is the cold check

Usually the top side of the dipstick is the lower level, because it enters the pan at a steep angle.
