The 2000 GT makes the fuel door from an eye sore to a cool homage part. and on top of that, matching the body lines.

Whomever in marketing thought of that deserved a trophy.

I think people just used to circular or retangular shape fuel doors for decades. If you really look at the supra picture above, that round fuel door looks very out of place.

the odd shape for the fuel door is do to the added locking mechanism to the rear of the fill up. 1 gen had the stupid pull level in inside the car on the floor. the engineers created a locking tank door so when your car is locked, so is your gas door. when your car is unlocked, so it your tank door. pretty simple stuff folks and much improved. no tribute to the 2000, no shaped to the body lines. just a function of making it easier to open your tank door.

I was thinking along the same lines, @s402bp5. It needs to be a certain width, and if you made that into the diameter of a circle it would be a comically large circle.

I'll take an odd fuel door shape any day if it means I don't have to go back into the car to pull the stupid floor level. it's a brilliant solution. take more crap out of the cockpit. same with the button to open the trunk.

Best thing about the fuel door is being located on the right side of the car, so when you pull up to the pump you can swing your driver's door all the way open. The door on my Spider is on the left and one time I nicked the edge of the door on a brick column when I thought it was far enough away not to scrape. It's really important to get this right on these coupes with incredibly wide doors that swing way out.

And this is probably the worst thing about having a right-hand drive car - getting out at pumps in Japan is a goddamn squeeze. And to make things worse, they love a good compact court here, so the parking "box" is also comically tight.

As to the actual design of the fuel door - I'm a big fan. Circles are boring, the design they went with is infinitely better.

Me, too. I have actually admired that it seems simple yet unique.

I believe the fuel door like the premium wheels were designed after items from past japanese culture. The premium wheel spokes similar to a type or part of a samurai sword. The gas fuel door design came from some type of Japanese bowl shape.

@HumboldtEF thinks the wheels are patterned after the Sai dagger rather than the katana sword.
