LordXenu's Neptune GR86 Build Journal

Traded in my 2021 2.0 Supra in February for a 2023 Neptune Blue Premium GR86 Automatic. The dealership gave me exactly what I paid for my Supra back in December of 2020...Essentially drove it two years for free. I would've preferred a manual GR86, but not too much of a big deal. I'll be using this car as a part time track rat / promotional vehicle for my company Experimental Brand LLC which is skate decks, wheels, apparel, artwork, etc. geared towards the automotive enthusiast.

Purchase Day!

The GR86 came with the following add-ons;
  • GR Cat-back Exhaust
  • GR Automatic Shift Knob
  • Partial Clear Wrap
  • Rear Bumper Clear Wrap w/ Embossed GR Logo
  • Homelink Dimming Rearview Mirror

Once I purchased the 86, I sent it over to my buddy's shop for;
  • Paint correction
  • 35% ceramic tint
  • CeramicPro coating

When it was sitting in storage over the remainder of Wisconsin winter (That still seems to keep going), I started doing little things to it while researching performance parts and tunes, etc.

  • Removed the charcoal filter from the OEM intake
  • Unplugged the fake sound speaker

Once Spring started to peek, I began ordering some parts and taking things apart...Starting with the front end to remove that annoying front plate bracket.

The bolts would just spin in the rubber grommets, so the front needed to come off and removed from the other side. It obviously left some gaping holes, but I'll be working up a remedy soon.

Next up was to get the modding going. I ordered the Off-The-Line equal length catted and coated header. Even though it's catted, it will still set a CEL from time-to-time. If you're on fence about catted or catless...just choose catless. The OTL header sounds good and it's a nicely made piece.

Had the car lowered with some Tein H lowering springs, which (to me) have a perfect ride quality and an OEM+ stance. They do ride better than the overly harsh OEM springs.

Next up was getting a little tuning done...I went with the Delicious Tuning stage II flash.

Coming Soon;
  • Flex Fuel Sensor and Retune
  • Brembo BBK (Fronts)
  • OTL "Super Suck" Intake Kit (Basically removes the OEM intake silencers and replaces the OEM filter)

Very nice Neptune! How do you like the tune? Curious to hear about cold start, throttle response, and acceleration.

Thanks! Not enough seat time with it yet, but I’ll let you know shortly. Throttle response does seem to be improved.

Installed the OTL intake kit that basically swaps out the filter and eliminates the two silencer boxes. I plan to eventually add a blower so there's no point in messing with an aftermarket intake at the moment.

Also, add some GR86 puddle lights and GR floor mats & truck mat

Was a supporting vendor at a sizable season opener car shower today. The 2023 GR86 got a lot of attention throughout the day.

I feel like the tune cleans up the drivability and turns up the wick it a little bit...Throttle response is improved as well.

I have the flex-fuel sensor and tune coming soon as well as a Brembo BM4 brake kit.
Installed the Delicious Tuning Flex-Fuel kit along with their stage II flex tune this morning. Pretty quick and straight forward install. @thekevinvo has nice quick install vid on his YouTube channel.

Now just waiting on my Brembo BM4 kit to ship.

I'm in MKE proper. Looking forward to seeing more of your mods. Very interested in the Flex fuel. I've got an openflash tablet from my old FR-S that I hoped would be useful by now.
Good luck with your venture. Hit me on the DM if you ever meet up.

Been working on an illustration of my 86 which will become a sticker.

Maybe 85% complete at the moment.
