Congrats on the car! Sucks you couldn't grab a Neptune but the Orange looks pretty neat too. @Nannou might be able to help answer that harness question. He's got a Joying 9 inch head unit and made a post about it here.
Thank you for replying. I have already sent a DM to @Nannou . Hopefully I'll be able to get some modern technology in the cabin soonCongrats on the car! Yep let's chat more in the DMs about this, save spamming the forum I guess haha.
- I am looking for something that would be slim, thin-bezel and cover the entire stereo faceplate instead of fitting inside the hole. The head unit area would measure to be approximately 270mm wide and 145mm tall. I’m currently eyeing the Joying 11.6 inch unit, which is listed at 270mm width and 165mm height. I want to know what kind of harness I am supposed to get in order to get this installed
ETC 2.0 definitely works standalone, and there's no need for it to be connected to a head unit. I know this because this is what I do
- ETC 2.0 only works with Japanese head unit (brand specific as well), so I will be limited to ETC 1.0, which can work independently of the head unit. The problem is Japanese government is phasing out ETC 1.0, which leads to my question (to Japan GR86 owner only, I guess), “Can I still get ETC 1.0 installed in new car?” Because you have to have your ETC registered to your name by a certified shop
You can connect the camera to any head unit that takes a standard composite video input, so long as you've got the adapters.
- Is the backup camera has to be compatible with the head unit or I can just get whatever and it will plug just right in?
Thank you for replying. There are no official announcement from Toyota about the discontinuation yet. Their 2023 catalogue for customer still list all of the standards color. However, for the last new batch in Japan, you cannot option for the Neptune at all, this also happens to some other market. I am assuming all of the Neptune currently being built are already ordered quite some time ago. I gradually start to enjoy the orange color so far because it is really clean, not showing any dirt at all. I know the car is dirty only when the windows are absolutely caked with pollen and dried dropletsNeptune is being discontinued?
As of this very moment on the USA Toyota Inventory Search website within 500 miles distance from Bay Area California there are 20 total Neptune's being built or in transit. 8 MT's & 12 AT's so I'm surprised why there are all of these reports of the color being stopped. The second GR86 I've ever seen in person was Neptune & although a great color, was just not for me...
Congrats on the Solar Shift Orange by the way!

Thank you for you detailed info. I am going to use the Line group to talk about this more in detailYep let's chat more in the DMs about this, save spamming the forum I guess haha.
ETC 2.0 definitely works standalone, and there's no need for it to be connected to a head unit. I know this because this is what I doYour dealer might have said that ETC2.0 should be connected to a specific head unit (my dealer said the exact same thing), but that's because they're money-grubbing dicks who want to up-sell you on everything. They might give some weak reasonings like "it means the navi can track your expressway costs" or whatever, but any Android head unit running a decent navi app has the same ability, and doesn't need to talk to ETC to do it.
So I told them to stick their Toyota ETC and head unit up their ass, and got them order a Panasonic model instead. It's definitely ETC 2.0, and it's definitely not relying on their specific head unit to work. Definitely don't go with ETC 1.0. Like you say it's being phased out, and you actually get more discounts with ETC2.0.

You've got two choices for backup cameras: Subaru and Toyota. They're compatible between cars. Subaru's camera has a flush fit in the hole, but it costs twice as much as the Toyota version. You can get both Toyota or Subaru to order their particular camera as a standalone part. I ordered mine from this website tho: トヨタ GR86 TOYOTA GR86 カーナビ取付けに必要なハーネス・カメラ変換・ステリモ変換 配線適合表 時風プレイス jifuplace
Note that the cheaper Toyota camera needs a separate converter unit in order to get an RCA composite video signal (also avail on that website). Subaru camera includes this converter, but Toyota is still cheaper all-up. Installation is super simple.
