In this new video ThatDudeInBlue explains how much of impact the GR Corolla will have on the hot hatch market.
The msrp if it’s at Type R price, will turn people off. LolVery likely >10k markup will ruin the Corolla first before anything really happens in the video
So a car that would smoke a type R, adds AWD, looks better (subjective but most agree) for the same price would turn people off? Sure its a corolla, but the type R is a civic. It will be worth every penny the price of the type R. But not worth the adjusted price the 1st year or so.The msrp if it’s at Type R price, will turn people off. Lol
Agree 100%. Unique engine, way better subjective looks and AWD.So a car that would smoke a type R, adds AWD, looks better (subjective but most agree) for the same price would turn people off? I never said I would be turned off I’m saying that would be the whole negative aspect for people. I’m fully aware of what the GR Corolla is. It’s honestly a reintroduction to performance Corollas of the past that Toyota left behind. People will naturally compare it to a Type R because that was the rival in japan and in the market. So a car that would smoke a type R, adds AWD, looks better (subjective but most agree) for the same price would turn people off? Well actually out of all the cars in Toyota’s performance lineup the Yaris and Corolla could be grandfathered in reasonably being that they’ve been testing both cars with hydrogen and hybrid powertrains so far. They’ve been using the G16e in different variations for future use.The current GR Yaris in Europe does not smoke a Type R. Given that if the horsepower/torque is the same in a heavier body, the GR Corolla will not "smoke" a Type R either. I have to admit that I was wrong on this. I really did not see Toyota committing to this as a stand alone. But I do admit there is an obvious cost saving using the Corolla Hatch, existing AWD hardware and the 1.6 turbo engine. I just wonder about the certification cost for US. Other than the Yaris in Europe, what other product would Toyota have to utilize this 1.6 3 cylinder turbo. I am curious how its going to sell in the US. I suspect Toyota will price it below the type R simply because they can and because its also a physically smaller vehicle than a Type R. I've been wrong on the vehicle all along but my prediction is starting price at $33 K. That puts in price wise between the WRX and STI. Its physically smaller than both. In Europe because of its rally pedigree, it has a lot more meaning than it will in the US. Further I see it as a limited run considering the move to electric cars and the fact that small hatchbacks are not selling so much in the US. Toyota has had a history of limited run vehicles. AE86, MR2 versions 1, 2, and 3. Corolla 16 Hatch. The Celica actually had a decent history as did the Supra. Only Supra(AKA BMW Z4) came back after a long hiatus. So given Toyota's track record, color me skeptical for how long this GR Corolla will be on the market here.
The point I was getting at is they’ve been doing more then that with the G16 comparably to the FA series and other things.I just read the GR86 is only doing a 2 year stint in Europe because it will no longer meet safety regs. As for the
testing of the G16E, there is no infrastructure for hydrogen so if that is to become a possibility it is years off. I see a hybrid as a powertrain to go into a larger SUV in the US perhaps like what Volvo is currently doing. However, by 2025 Volvo is going all EV so that is short lived.
Is this coming to America? It WILL be great. It will also be impossible to get anywhere near MSRP for probably 2 years.
Yes GR corolla is coming. Same 3 cyl engine as the GR yaris but rumored to have a little more power. The corolla will not be as extreme as the yaris. It will be built on a normal assembly line and not hand built in a specialty factory. It wont have a carbon fiber roof or any of that.Is this coming to America?
