GR86 Special Edition and Options

Who has been able to order (in the states) a Special Edition? I don't know whether or not to blame Toyota corporate or if people that work at dealerships aren't doing their homework, but earlier in the year when I was calling around to reserve the model, no dealership had heard of the thing. Literally, not one. I then waited a few months and started calling again, maybe around a month ago? and WTF is going on with Toyota?
I live in Illinois and I have been calling everywhere. Dozens and dozens of dealerships from California to Maine and still, tons of people have still not heard of this car, over the past few weeks the Toyota webpage listed MSRP yet most dealerships can't give me a number, and the ones that do have a markup on average of 6k (plenty of places up to 10k or more, some places say "they can take a 1,000 dollar deposit to put my name on a list" without giving me a price) and I just don't get it.
I have never had to work this hard in my life to pay full price or even a few grand over for a new car. I have been questioning if it is even worth it. Is it worth it? Why didn't they bring the Hakone back? For me, I only want the special edition because the stitching and interior matches the exterior color (yes I know how ridiculous that sounds and that I'm willing to pay thousands more for it but, look, I never said I'm perfect) but given the markup, and the wheels which I do not like, the luster is rapidly fading.

Are we likely to see more color options? I don't think the first gen had too many and I may end up getting a wrap, my first gen is red maybe the second gen will be red for me as well. I just can't reason paying 6k more for the same car as the Special Edition has no mechanical advantage, it's all just cosmetic, when that money can get me a carbon fiber air intake, exhaust manifold and new exhaust, Fluidampr (assuming they are making a crankshaft pulley for the second gen as well) and XPEL for that difference.
And also no word on RTV issues. Random add but there it is.

I'm very grateful Akio brought this car into existence, but damn Toyota, get it together.

At this point I am waiting until the new year because I won't be driving my GR86 in winter, so by then maybe Toyota will announce some new things? Hopefully?

I know my dad is looking for the special edition as well, and he's in with 2 dealerships in TN right now. I'm not 100%, but I think its just the orange for Toyota and the blue for Subaru for the special editions. He's going to try and keep it bone stock for the sake of resale later.

I just got my 2023 BRZ in sapphire blue pearl and I can tell you from a few times I've driven it, it was totally worth it

Ohhhh my bad, I should have definitely been more clear. I am absolutely getting the GR86, still love my BRZ, I was only dragging my feet because I was waiting for the Special Edition and lately I've been wondering if the special edition is worth it.

Yes it is, Toyota went with the Solar Shift color which I keep calling solar flare, out of curiosity, do you know the kind of markup the dealership is charging him? I think the lowest mark-up I was quoted for was 6k-ish? the cost of the vehicle came to 42k, I can put 1k deposit down to potentially reserve one, that's assuming the dealership actually gets the car, given that there's only going to be 860 of these things in this country. Kudos to your dad's willpower, I think regardless of the GR86 I get, I won't be able to keep it stock, I'm a child with a big Hot Wheels car.

Don't shoot the messenger, but the 2 dealerships he has are at MSRP😬 He knows the owner and the GM at one of them and then the other is one that just doesn't sell at markup and is known in the area for not doing markups. I will say, he will have a better chance at the one where he knows the owner as they sell more vehicles than the other as the other hasn't had an allocation for an 86 in probably 4-5 months.

As for him keeping it stock, yea it's going to be hard for him as he had the original and was one of, if not the first, automatic in Florida to have a turbo back in 13-14. 8lbs of boost putting out about 415 whp, carbon everywhere, Nameless exhaust, headers, coils, Wedsport SA67R's on 255's, just spent ridiculous amount of money on it lol. He's now gonna live vicariously through mine😂

Sounds like a really really awesome build. If anything, I am definitely happy that your dad knows the owner and hope you guys can lock down a Special Edition. I am a bit indignant about the markups that Toyota has. I guess I am still kind of trying to find the limited edition but I think I am talking myself into a Neptune blue with dual white racing stripes, with Ceramic White Gram Light wheels. Toying with that idea anyway, I now have a few pennies to rub together, so naturally, I am trying to find the fastest way to spend them.

Yea, I really think it's just timing and trying to find the right set of people from a dealer. I'm digging that Neptune, white strips, and Gram Light wheels idea you got going!

IMO, I don't think it's worth it. I was ready to wait even longer to get a 10th avy one but really there's nothing that makes it special or stand out besides the color, which I do like a lot, but I'm happy with my 2023 Neptune Blue.

Only reason I'm waiting on the 10th anniversary is because I had the 2013 that my son so graciously shared info about. Someone posted today that Canada is now getting allocations for them. As far as the stealerships go, good luck!! I absolutely hate them!! Trick is to use your resources around you. Everyone needs to buy a car. Everyone (kinda) knows someone that knows someone. Ask around and see if a friend or family member knows someone at a dealership. Make contacts. Go to car events (if the dealership has any). Show your face as much as possible. It's all just networking.

Both dealerships "promised" a special edition at MSRP. Whether they get one or not is the big question. Like you said, 860 only. If they get one, I'm sure I'll know in less than 30 days....keep ya posted!!
Neptune Blue was my first choice until the 10th was announced
I wish you luck! I dont know how Toyota will handle this special model (not good so far its sounds) but I know with the regular GR86 some dealers will tell you they're "ordering" your car but thats not true with Toyota, some may be honest and tell you they cant order a specific trim or color. Anyway you're just being put on a wait list and if they happen to be allocated a car and you're next in line they'll offer it up. It might not be the spec you're even looking for.
As far as the "game" goes, Toyota does not "order" vehicles. Subaru does. Toyota gets allocations weekly or every other week with products that are assigned to them. Those are the vehicles people get to pick from. If customers are looking for specific vehicles with specific options, dealers have the option to trade other dealers for that vehicle. It's a great system for Toyota but not necessarily for the customers because we often settle for whatever they can get...like a standard automatic GR86 instead of a premium 6-spd.....

In that regard a bulk of dealerships have been honest about the allocation. Here's the tricky part with dealerships (I may be taking a very adversarial view, I can intellectually understand they are just trying to make money) I saw some deposits I would sign, and the verbage DOES NOT include GR86 Special Edition, it only reads GR86, so if that dealership does not get a Special Edition, I either just paid 1k for a trim I did not want, or I have to eat the cost. I was also told that some places "put in request for 5" or so of the models, it took tremendous amounts of willpower to not laugh, they are going to be lucky to get one.

I am glad to hear you like the Neptune, I was thinking about getting the Track Bred because my BRZ is red, but, I saw the Neptune and I don't know how else to describe it other than pretty. I spend far too much time looking at things I'm going to buy for the car, and I think i am talking myself into that color choice.

Best of luck to you, really genuinely hope you get one, I know I am getting really excited thinking about getting the GR86. At this point, I am just too old and tired to put in that much effort to continue hunting down the car. It was very disappointing that so many people that actually work at Toyota have never heard of that model being released. I actually think I talked myself out of trying to find one and I that Neptune color just looks more and more appealing. I am going to have to look at some site or something that can allow you to "build" a car based on aftermarket parts and colors because I'd like to see the parts that I want to get on either a red or the Neptune blue one.
Thank you and I feel your pain! I'm fortunate at my age that it won't hurt too bad if either deal falls through. If it's meant to be, it's meant to be. My son has his and I can always borrow it if I need to scratch that itch. Side note...I'm gonna see if the dealership would offer me a GR Corolla instead...LOL!!

Honestly, every color looks great on the car, really just depends on you. I also have a problem of looking at things way too much as well lol
New here…as of today, can anyone still order Anniversary edition without ADM ? I’m in Southern CA . I like the color, matching accents interior, & the cat back exhaust.

Good luck! Especially based on your location. Honestly between price difference and markup, that's the equivalent of a titanium exhaust, exhaust manifold, air intake and advan gt wheels. Well, that's the way I look at it anyway. I recently made a few more calls and I just find it too difficult to accept the price difference. The lowest price I was quoted for was 42, 1k refundable deposit. That's assuming they even get it, Toyota dealerships don't decide, they just get sent the vehicles and when there's 860 for thousands of dealerships, unless you know someone I see it as a bit unrealistic. Unless of course you have the money and are set on the anniversary edition then, you know, rad, go for it. But yeah if I gave the impression you order it then that's my fault. You are out on a list after you put a deposit down and if they happen to get it and you're first on the list then the odds probably aren't good.
