I noticed that in Australia that the advertised horsepower is 230 and in Europe 232. I suspect that reflects the missing "emissions filter". In Japan advertising I've seen 235 mentioned.
I have different numbers, better compare kW values for exact power outputs.
AUS is 174kW, EU 172kW, JP 173kW

Australian/US kW: 1.34 mechanical HP
European kW: 1.36 metric HP (usually PS or CV)

Ok, so...

1.34 X 174 = 233.16 hp

1.36 X 172 = 233.92 metric hp

233 - 228 = 5 hp

That sounds about right for the pressure drop behind the "carbon air dam".
EU has a damn particulate filter as well, I bet on a dyno the differences would be much more, with EU cars being in significant disadvantage.

10hp is a bit optimistic...
Peak hp gains near redline are not that much. But definitely the area under the power curve is improved. At some rpm it has upto 10hp. Also, the gains only start to appear beyond 4k. So if you don't rev past 4k while testing, you don't really notice any gains. It's pretty much stock like below 4k. Once I get my car I'll see it for myselves and report back.

Those are the diagrams I was looking at too, but didn’t know if the actual part was the same. It seems like the Toyota part is about $10 more.

Anyone get the Toyota one vs the Subaru?

Question: For everyone that has done this mod, including @TRU-BOOST, has it negatively affected your idle or cause any issues like MAF getting dirtier? If you did this, are you using a paper or cotton/oil filter? I may do this over winter.

Mine has not had any negative side effects. Keep in mind that in these cars are sold to most other markets without the charcoal pad to begin with. I am still using the original air filter at the moment, but I do have the HKS super filter on order. Its been like a month..... I should probably check on that. 🤣

No issues, more induction sound, more grins. Still have OEM air filter element. Would be extremely surprised if MAF would get dirtier as the charcoal "filter" is more like a net full of little charcoal pellets. It provides no filtration (and shouldn't else it would plug up over time).

I just did mine since I had some time over the holidays. I actually just bought a new part, ripped out the carbon filter and then removed the factory upper box and replaced it with the modified one. That way if I ever get flack about it or have to go back, I have the original on hand. I ended up going through Toyota for the part although you can get the same Denso part from Subaru for about $10 cheaper. I had to order other things so with shipping it was a wash and I ordered from McGeorge Toyota.

Also, I ordered some more stock paper air filters. They were Denso from Japan (red ones that look like one from factory).

I debated to go K&N or GR branded cotton-oil air filter but I have always had to clean my MAF sensor on vehicles I have run them on even with factory oiled fresh filters, as the oil does get on the sensor. After seeing so many videos and reviews of this mod for both GR86/BRZ and other Subarus, it seems like the performance gain is due to the carbon filter removal and not K&N. I just plan to replace the factory paper filters more often.

I finally got my HKS filter and dropped it in the other day. It does surprisingly provide a little bit of extra intake noise. Although it is getting harder to hear now that I added the header and have full exhaust now. 🤣🤣

They are not oiled. They use a floss type media in a plastic frame. It looks almost like a cheap furnace filter, only more dense. Flow should definitely be higher than OEM. Not so sure about a micron rating for filtration, but it should be "good enough" for me. No matter what any manufacturer claims, you cant have more flow and better filtration. As you improve one the other will suffer. You have to decide what balance you are comfortable with. For me, I do oil changes every 4-5k and dont drive on dirt, gravel or dirty conditions, so I am fine with less filtration and more flow.

There are dry performance filters out there from AEM & HKS. The OEM will have better filtration though.

Agreed. There is no evidence to show the OEM intake causes any restriction on any NA builds so far. That is at least once the charcoal is removed. Any filter manufacturer will make the claims of how much more a filter "can" flow, but if the engine cant draw that much air in on its own it doesnt matter.
