Factory Alarm comes disabled

I recently purchased my 2023 GR86 Premium and was surprised to find out that the alarm system came disabled from the factory.

You can test it by lowering the window, lock and arm the alarm, keep the key fob away from the vehicle, wait 30 secs, reach in and flip the lock lever, and open the car door. This should trigger the factory car alarm. If it doesn't sound the alarm, that means the alarm is deactivated.

Despite what the manual says, you can activate the factory alarm by putting the car in accessory mode, lock the door, then unlock the door, open the driver’s door while pressing and holding on the door unlock switch and continue to press for approximately 15 seconds after the driver’s door has opened. The car honks once when it's activated and twice if it's deactivated.

You can repeat the testing procedures by lowering the window, lock and arm the alarm, keep the key fob away from the vehicle, wait 30 secs, reach in and flip the lock lever, and open the car door. This should trigger the factory car alarm.

The owners manual says to press the lock but for me it worked using the procedures above.

When the alarm goes off, you should get a notification from the Toyota app as well! Hopefully it works for you! 👍🏽

Good post!
Does the base have an alarm? And does it work with the APP? Compared to my 2013 base FR-S this car (GR86) has too much tech!

Not sure if the 2013 has one but the 2022+ GR86/Subaru BRZ should have one but may just need to be activated. I think if it has the keyless entry it should have it. Try it out to test it.
If I hit the lock button 3 times the vehicle honks. I assumed this was setting the alarm but I guess I'll need to test that theory.
This was one of the first things I saw and did on my GR86. When I wasn’t driving it, I was browsing the manual. But this is good for new owners to see.

I wonder if it's turned off at the factory so the alarm doesn't sound during transport.

Thanks for the heads up, mine was off. I tried this in accessory mode and I couldnt get i to work. However it does work in the ON position.

Now does this mean the alarm will be active everytime I lock the car? Or do I have to activate it everytime I get out of the car?
I didn't even know the car had an alarm. Thanks for this.

The alarm only goes off if the doors are opened when the alarm is armed. However, I did have a shock sensor added to the factory alarm 👍🏽

You just activate it once and it stay armed everytime you lock the car. The alarm arms about 30 seconds after you lock it. You can test it out with the procedures above by lowering the window locking the car door and leave the fob away from the vehicle, reach into the car, flip over the lock switch and open the car door, it'll sound the alarm and get a message ont he Toyota app. I did also have a shock sensor added to the factory alarm 👍🏽.

Which shock sensor did you go with?
Thank you for the good post. Another reason we despise car dealers. They know the cars are not alarmed. They should ask us, after they take our money, if we want the alarm activated. A**monkeys. I tried both versions and neither one caused the horn to beep once or twice. Why is there a 30 second pause to arm the alarm? (rhetorical). Off to the dealer for me to get the alarm activated. May as well waste their time now that my time has been wasted. A**monkeys

Not sure which one as I didn't install the shock sensor, I had that portion done by a specialist.

Which version of the GR86 do you have? I wonder if it's only available in the Premium trim?
