Does a weighted shift knob help shifter feel?

There's no proof a weighted knob does anything to synchros. The extra weight/force is applied down. Some people say it will but doing research I found 0 proof. Resting your arm on the shifter affects this much more than a weighted knob. That being said, going too heavy can't be good. I went with a 450g stainless knob from WC Lathewerks and love it. Shifts are smoother and less clunky(which is what I was after).

It definitely can accelerate wear on syncros. The throws are more effortless and with less feedback. The lack of feel means a lot of people are jamming the shifts right through the synchros, not allowing them to mesh fully. However, for those who have driven the car long enough to get the shift timing correct before switching to a heavy knob and stick to that timing after, the result is just smoother shifter movement.
I have tried many a shift knob in my days and I favor stock or lighter weight personally. A good lightweight shift knob can teach some people some mechanical sympathy. Further its pretty rare I sit in a sports car and think "I wish I could feel less of whats happening" in regards to pretty much any part of the experience.

From the replies here it seems to come down to personal preference. Another thing to consider along with the weight is the shape and feel of the shifter. Something that I liked about my new shift knob(besides the extra weight) was that it was positioned lower than the factory knob. The lower position, metal feel along with the heavier weight were all positives for me. Another positive is my oem knob stays stored in perfect condition if I ever decide to go back. IMO, I would not go any lower in weight than the stock 199 grams. ND Miatas come stock with a 300g shift knob to help improve shifter feel.
Are you trying to tell me it IS all about size and not how you use it...?! My whole life has been a lie. 🤦‍♂️

A lighter knob teaches some mechanical sympathy as well. When you can feel what is going on, you are less likely to just smash through the synchros. Sure its their job to match the rotational speed, but the more work you make them do, especially quickly while just grabbing a gear with zero attempt to match revs or be smooth, that is just shortening their lifespan.

I ended up settling on this knob from Beatrush. Its titanium and matches the trim and switch gear. If I recall correctly it is just a couple grams heavier than OEM, which is not what I normally like. The shape and weight distribution makes it actually feel like a lighter knob, though. The weight isnt just a giant ball on the very top. Instead the knob threads deep onto the shaft (you know you giggled 🤣) bringing the weight lower down reduces its impact on leverage. The result is that it feels like a very light knob that is metal and transmits all the wonderful snicks, clicks, thuds and vibrations that I love.
