adjustable lumbar seat mod

Stock seats in this car are pretty comfy but I have lower back issues and wanted a bit more support without sticking a cushion on the seat. I tried a couple of the cushions I've used in other cars but they were either too big and/or didn't sit in the right place. To add some support, I used the same seat opening method twlai outlined in this thread and installed this inflatable arm cuff from amazon for a nice $16 adjustable lumbar support. Haven't had much seat time with it yet but pretty happy with it so far! I remember reading about folks doing a similar mod on NC Miatas and was happy to learn it's pretty easy to open up our seats too.

Some key points for anyone interested in doing the same:
  • I removed the velcro on the pouch as it was fraying the gray fabric inside the seat
  • In hindsight I should have cut off the rest of the arm cuff; it doesn't inflate and leaving it folded over just made inserting and positioning the main part harder (after I took the picture below I had to move the whole thing over to the left to center it properly)
  • On the premium I didn't have a big plastic clip on the bottom but one big one and one small, with a gap towards the left for a hose that I'm assuming is part of the heated seats. I put the meter and pump hoses in that gap when closing up the seat but you could probably route them through the side if you have the big clip on the base seats
  • Hardest part for me was reaching way under to remove the elastic band from the plastic hooks (first step). I opened the door and sort of positioned myself sideways perpendicular over the door sill so I could reach my arm all the way under, rather than trying to reach while sitting in the back seat
  • Fully inflated it doesn't really stick out too much, maybe an inch or so, and doesn't span the whole width of the seat. If you want something bigger then the STI lumbar pad or a purpose-built lumbar pad might work better for you

Hello from Oakland. I fractured L1 last January and use a lumbar pillow. Hows your mod working out? I need more thickness or I'd try that.

I did this and no issue. Copied someone on here.
