I read this article too but, I really hope this doesn't come as a surprise to anyone. I don't think people know what else to say about the gr86 because it's just a waiting game. I've reached out to 5 dealerships in Illinois and have yet to hear anything new.

I'm just waiting to be surprised for those MPG stats to be proven wrong, the old Generation had pretty good MPG compared to what Toyota/Subaru had the pegged the MPG. I think we will hear more about the GR 86 in a few days when the embargo lifts on the 17th.
You want a sports car be prepared to pay for the gas. I mean it is a bigger motor as well so....

Exactly
Its still pretty good for a sports car.
Ohh for sure. My guy has a torque dip to eek out little better gas mileage. Retuning makes the car a bit faster, but for that gas mileage with the additional bigger engine, peak torque at 3.6k or so rpms and a negligible weight difference, it's awesome. I just wish I could swap what's under the hood with my car because I'm so intensely displeased with the body and interior of the gr86.

Does it still sip premium gas or regular fuel would do?

Almost assured that its premium.
Let's just be honest... .boxer engines aren't fuel efficient. I do feel like a turbo version of the car is inevitable this time. Right?
The instruction of the previous model required premium gasoline, in Europe RON98. There is no need to delude yourself, the GR86 will be optimized for the same fuel. For me, this is a big minus, the cost of use increases significantly.
I had a 2016 Mustang GT and I was lucky that thing got 25 mpg average. It still surprises me that Subaru can't get better mileage out of their motors these days.

I don’t think so. They say it’s a packaging thing but I think it’s more of a marketing thing. Considering the 86/BRZ are getting high praise compared to the Supra, last thing Toyota would do is make a turbo 86/BRZ that would eat at Supra sales.
I am going to love the MPG on the BRZ. I am coming from an Infiniti G37 Sport with 328 HP that got 20 MPG. When I first got the Infiniti I thought I would not want to floor it because of the lower gas mileage, but I got used to it. :) Gas prices in the US are fairly cheap compared to other countries in the world.
There was a cnet review recently where they claimed highway mileage of 35 after a few days. It’s just the way the EPA tests new cars that hurts N/A cars across the board.
Did the gear ratios change from the previous gen?

If its going to be anything (and I honestly doubt that there will be) it would have to be a supercharger, because its less of a impact of the drivetrain - otherwise there would be other chassis upgrades required.

I'm not sure any manufacturer is looking at building any new models that are gas only.
Did the gear ratios change from the previous gen?
Yes, they went back to pre-2017 gear ratios. You could run 2017 diff, which is what I am hoping to do eventually along with other minor NA stuff (once my warranty and finance is done).

I'm confused why the GR86 has such poor economy for the modest power they produce. The Porsche GTS Flat 6 4.0L has WLTP estimates of 21.5-23.5 US mpg. The Porsche puts out 400 BHP, has 2 extra cylinders and is only estimated to be marginally worse. If it's only going to be a few mpg difference I'll take the 4L 6 cylinder please.
It’s a shame that the GR86 gets bad mileage from the WLTP cycle. My previous gen BRZ does 6.9l/100km the way I use it. That’s not so bad but the tax you pay on the car is based on numbers that are far worse. Not a problem in most parts of the world but it will be a problem in Europe. It just pisses me off that I need to pay a lot of CO2 tax even though the car doesn’t produce an awful lot in the real world. There, I needed to get that off my chest and just want to keep telling you folks in the US how lucky you are that this car is TRULY affordable on your side of the Atlantic. Hell, I’d probably buy two if I lived there 😋
