2022 GR86 catastrophic engine failure at 5k miles, Toyota refusing to cover under warranty

I purchased a new Toyota GR86 in June of 2022, manual transmission, premium package, in white. I bought the extended warranty and the maintenance plan. I Loved it. I paid over the MSRP to get it.

On January 1st (less than six months old), the car with 5,010 miles spun a bearing resulting in a catastrophic engine failure. The vehicle had yet to have its first 7,500-mile service. No warning lights or indicators beforehand and the car was never tracked. It was flatbed towed to the nearest Toyota dealer (Toyota of Marin). The initial reports from the dealer, once they removed the oil pan and inspected it, was RIPG (or “rest in place gasket”), also known as RTV silicon, found in the oil pick up. The engine had metal particles in the oil pan, highlighting significant damage to the entire engine.

Fast forward six weeks later, after dozens of calls with the dealer and Toyota, they refuse to cover the failure under warranty. They also refuse to share the report from the Toyota Factory Service Specialist who inspected the car.

They are quoting me $27,500 out-of-pocket to replace the motor.

If you have a 2022 Toyota GR86, beware.

Any advice? I tried the Toyota Brand Engagement Center, but no luck.

What’s the diagnosis the dealership service dept gave you? Did diags show a severe over-rev, i.e. “money shift”? That wouldn’t be covered by warranty.
They claim "lack of oil", but the low oil indicator sensor never trigged. They cannot answer that question. Also, the car only had 5,010 miles, so it had never had its first service since new from the factory. They also refuse to share the details report from the Toyota FTS. Very strange.

$27,500? How's that?
I have no idea, the MSRP is $32,000. They said a new motor, plus labor to install $27,500. Crazy right.

Did you check the dipstick at all prior to the failure? I think before my first oil change (at 1000k) my car came with oil that was in the middle of the level, so on the short side. But I also didnt check it upon getting the car and was suspicious that the factory oil was easier to eat up

+1 on the comment above. Additionally, memorialize all of your conversations with both the dealer and any individuals at Toyota in writing as a contemporaneous memo. Record who you spoke with, when you spoke with them, and what (to the best of your recollection) what you spoke about.

Seems like you need to take them to court if they can't provide you any proof of ground.

Eventhough, the factory oil is kinda garbage. But it's advertised from factory to dump it at 5000 miles. 10 miles over shouldn't kill your engine, if both subaru and Toyota are confident in the factory oil for that many millage.

And 27k dollars??? They are out of their mind, you can buy an ebay low mileage FA24D for less than 7k. Find a reputable subaru mechanic can swap that engine in for less than 5k(I think it's probably less).

I fucking hate dealership man. It's a hit or miss on some of these dealerships. If you could do this all over again, I would first call up ToyotaUSA to start a case for you instead of having dealership to make that decision for you. I wonder if you still can tho...

Lastly, you should do something Blake did. Expose the fk out of Toyota, and have media put them on blast. Then they might bend over backward for good press, which it's a pity cus they should have learned from the first time around.

Yeah even with the top screen of the pick up tube fully clogged. There will be still 70% of oil flow. Oil pressure shouldn't drop that much, unless the driver is really beating on it.

Unless you have a ton of followers on IG, I would take this to car and driver / road and track etc. Press is what got Toyota to do anything last time.

The other one was "drifting" and then they covered it... what's this one?

You should check engine oil more often than zero between off dealer floor and 5,000 miles?

I 100% agreed with checking oil level. Especially on factory oil. But if toyobaru are so confident in telling us to do first oil change at 5k miles then they should be confident in the fact that a brand new engine shouldn't brun that much oil to begin with 😂

Good luck man.

I also have a 22 Premium, AT though. I got the extended warranty as well.
My dealership has been a pain in the ass to deal with after the purchase.

Sorry for the loss of the engine. Any chance of saving the motor with a rebuild?
I think 27k for a motor is just insane..

Yes. Collect all your docs and consult a lawyer.

There is a lot more to this story. Can’t wait to hear it all. Good luck to OP -
Absent a money shift or some REALLY hard driving, this should be on Toyota.

I agree.

I think there is a post on this forum of a member finishing a track event and his car spun a bearing. He was not even flooring it when it happened. Toyota ran it through diagnostics and had aSubaru engineer tear down the motor. He got new shirt block and he was back running in less than a month or so.
It’s tough to say what Toyota will decide until they get to bottom of it. Majority of the RTV issues have been due to excessive beating on the engine.

Highly doubt it, if op didn't do his first oil change lol.
